【正文】 o is to try their best to learn new things and knowledge. Although some students want to improve their spoken English in rural areas of Gansu province, it seems to them that it is quite hard. In the process of spoken English learning, students always focus too much on accuracy. When they focus too much on accuracy or being correct with the pronunciation of a word or a phrase, they tend to lose the flow of the language. What students should do is that you should focus more on ideas you want to express. If you can’t be understood by people around you, you can try your best to repeat and clarify. Students should remember that it is not the place and time for accuracy when you are discussing or talking with other people. (Wang Qiang, 2021) There are a lot of ways for students to improve their spoken English. Cultivating Interest in Speaking English Interest is the best teacher. Students who are interested in speaking English can do better than those who are not interested in. To those who are not very interested in speaking English, they not only wait for the teacher to teach them English passively, but also often are forced to open their mouths to speak English in class. As a result, their spoken English is being poorer and poorer. Therefore, cultivating the students’ interest in speaking English is very important. There are many ways to get this goal, such as watching movies, listening to English songs and so on. English movies A great number of young people enjoy watching movies, especially those wellknown foreign movies. In modern society, English movies are quite popular and available everywhere. To students, what they watch are just the scenaries of movies. They prefer listening to the translated lines. However, listening to English lines of 11 movies can do good to spoken English learning. Most of the lines in movies are oral English in style. They are very useful in daily life and easy to understand and memorize. Students can imitate the pronunciation of actors and actress and write down those useful sentences and expressions. English songs Singing English songs is a good way to improve oral English. English songs include a lot of language knowledge that is useful for spoken English. This mainly reflects in words, phrases, idioms, expressions and sentence patterns. Words in English songs are often simple and vivid and most of them are those used in daily life by western people. As for sentences, most of them are short and authentic. For instance, in the song yesterday once more, we can find this phrase: “l(fā)ook back on” which means “recall”。 In the song easy e, easy go, there are many useful daily expressions about saying “goodbye”. “Goodbye”, “farewell”, “wish you well”, “ take it slow”. These are all used when people depart with each other. Once we can sing this song, we can also use them. What’s more, students can easily learn much about Englishspeaking countries’ cultures and customs which can be rather useful for background knowledge accumulationspeaking English well needs some background knowledge of Englishspeaking countries. In a word, English songs are useful for spoken English learning. Imitating Standard Pronunciation Although there are some students who are active to open their mouths to speak English in rural areas of Gansu province, their speech can not be understood by people around them. Because their pronunciation is poor and obscure. And some students speak English with the local Chinese dialect. There is no doubt that imitation is a good way for students to learn spoken English. As is known, babies imitate the pronunciation of people around them. And later they can speak by themselves. But it does not mean that imitation will naturally bring them what is regarded as the standard pronunciation. As for students, the final purpose of imitating is to correct their pronunciation in order to speak English well. Listening to English tapes is a good way for imitating. Students can imitate the 12 correct pronunciation of words or phrases as well as the whole sentence. Retelling in English It is beneficial that teachers let their students retell some stories or materials in English to improve their spoken English ability for municating with others. At first, it is acceptable for students to retell what they have read. It is true that retelling is not equal to reciting. Retelling is a creative activity that requires students to prehend the original meaning and anize the information with their own words. Retelling is a plicated process and students should do much work than reciting. Some students are not immersed in listening to the teacher in class, for they feel bored. But retelling can force them to be patient and be careful of some details in English materials. widening English daily words It is certain that language is a tool of munication, so students should widen their English new words expressions constantly in according with the development of modern society to cater for new needs. More and more new Chinese words have been or will be piled into dictionaries. Of course, English language is the same. Students should learn and update their English daily words in time. Otherwise, their English speaking will be out of date to the Englishspeaking people. Here are some greeting words for examples: In the past, in some English textbooks, students were taught to express “How do you do?” to greet someone for the first time, but the expression hardly appear in the United States now. Americans often use some informal greetings instead of using formal ones. Tom met Lucy in a restaurant in New York: Tom: Hello, I am Tom, you are? Lucy: Hi, Tom. I am Lucy. Tom: Nice to meet you, Lucy. Does everything go well? Lucy: Pretty good. What students should pay attention to is that it is not rude to introduce
