【正文】 unch‘‘ and ―where are you going‘‘ or ―where have you been‖ they are typical Chinese English for Greeting. It may be replied by ―It‘s none of your business.‖ In addition, it39。s a mon knowledge that the response for pliments and praises are different in Chinese people and westerns. If someone said ―you are very beautiful just like a film star‖ to a Chinese woman, she mostly feels shame and replies self–effacing ―No, I am not so beautiful actually.‖ As Chinese, we can understand the woman‘s modest, but if the person who is a western, he or she may be confused by the woman‘s modest, maybe, they will feel that their praise are not accepted by others, As we know, When these words are said to a west lady, she just smiles and says ―Thank you‖. These are the different characters between the two cultural backgrounds, so if people are not familiar with these differences, misunderstanding will hamper everywhere. Chinese learners should pay attention to these sentences: ―How old are you‖ ―How much do you make‖ ―Are you married or single‖ or ―you‘ve had a hard time‖ and so on, they just suit for Chinese people. As English has much idioms, sayings Chinese also has its own saying, allusions, such as“阿 Q精神” ,“說曹操 ,曹操到” etc, but how to express them to foreigners in English and make foreigners understand them? If the foreigners have not read―三國(guó) ‖and have no impression on ―The true story of AhQ‖ It is not rare this joke 攀枝花學(xué)院本科畢業(yè)論文 Body 12 happened ―When foreigner learning Chinese, there is a exam, says, A person and B person are waiting for C person, B person plain that why he haven‘t e yet, at this time, there is ing a person, and A says ―說曹操,曹操到 ‖ The question is ―Who is ing.‖ Nearly all foreigners answer ―曹操 ‖, so don‘t just tell them ―AhQ spiritual‖ and ―when Cao Cao is referred, he is ing‖ but to explain what is AhQ spiral and who is ―Cao Cao‘‘. There is a story: A young Chinese went for a swim in a nearby public pool. To the surprise of his roommates and a foreign friend, he returned very shortly ―the pool was too crowded‘‘ He explained ―And the water should have been changed a long time ago, it was so dirty. It was like dumplings being cooked in sesame paste (芝麻醬煮餃子) His Chinese friends chuckled at the unusual but vivid parison, But to the foreigner, who had never tasted sesame paste and had never saw jiaozi (dumplings) being cooked, so the humor was lost. (Deng Yanchang, Liu Runqing, 1989, 78) In English, there is a sentence ―It was packed like sardines‖ and the vividness might be lost for Chinese, because very few Chinese have ever seen a newly–opened–can be flat of sardines with neat rows of finger–sized fish packed tightly in a small container. Generally speaking, be unfamiliar with the English Cultural background knowledge will bring out inconvenience in understanding English. Be unfamiliar with the Chinese cultural background knowledge and unknowing the differences between them will bring out inconvenience in using English in daily munication. 2. Right Way to Write English Article Westerns always look at matter in a different way from most Chinese in many situations. It also consists in writing styles: Chinese writing style and English writing style, although they have the same or similar characters such as ―both of them need a well though –out ideas, both of them need careful choice of materials and both them 攀枝花學(xué)院本科畢業(yè)論文 Body 13 need stressing in depth knowledge of one‘s subject‖(Wang Youliang, 1980, 77). We feel more about their differences as English major students. When studying the translation Crouse, we feel a little difficult to receipt the materials translated from Chinese traditional poem into English, in many Chinese learner‘s opinion, it‘s impossible to find the mood of the translated materials. On the other aspect, for the Chinese learners, especially, the beginning learners, it is hard to write an idiomatic English article, they are bound to be affected by their native language. So, it is easy to distinct the position was written by a western or by a Chinese. And some Chinese students always get the ment ―they are chingish‖ about their writing. Once many people have studied the different styles between English writing and Chinese writing, there are some items, which reflect the obvious different characters, listed. 1 In Narration and description In Chinese writing, writers seem to like using more adjective, adverbial words and other modifiers, it makes the position more vivid, and on the other hand, it reflects the level of the writers. But English writing is different, in English writing。 the ideas like to be directly expressed. However most Chinese beginners often neglect this, for avoiding is regarded as incapacities, they like to change the form of expression and add adjectives, adverbial etc in their writing. Indeed it is right in Chinese writing but only be called ―chingnish‖ in English writing. 2 Chinese and English speaking people seem to look differently on the use of se t phrases and expressions, Chinese more tend to well—chosen ―four –character expressions‖ even though they have been used over and over again. 3 In persuasive writing such as social of political essays and editorials, English writers tend to be less militant in tone and language than most Chinese, the guiding idea is to let the facts speak for themselves, so it is rather sparing use of ―we must, we should not …, It is wrong to …‖etc. and the tone is usually restrained, the language is generally moderate. 4 In Chinese, there are many objects, modifiers, but in English, it is impossible to 攀枝花學(xué)院本科畢業(yè)論文 Body 14 have ―valuable opinions‖ ―impractical illusion
