And if the skopos requires intratextual coherence, the criterion of coherence rule is not applicable in use. B. Relevance to the present study Most scholars think that Skopo Theory is only applicable to the advertisement, tourism, and the movie subtitles. It is because that Skopos Theory just properly matches such short and easy translation application. Actually, it is also can be used to analyze the translation of text, including the Bible. So the thesis makes an analysis of the Chinese translation of proper noun in CUV based on Skopos Theory. Chapter Ⅳ .A study of the Chinese translation of proper noun in the Bible from the perspective of Skopos Theory This Chapter analyzes the Chinese translation of proper noun in the Chinese Union Version (CUV) respectively based on the skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule of the Skopos Theory. A. An analysis of the eponym translation in the CUV 1. Characteristics of the eponym translation in the CUV The CUV version of Chinese translation is on the basis of principles of transliteration when it deals with the name and social 16 statues of people in the Bible. And when the CUV version es out, Chinese readers are confused about this version of Bible, which is weird and difficult to understand. In the Chinese translation, some eponym translation are more than 3 letters in Chinese which is not monly seen in China。 some are not like the family names and first names, and some names too long to remember. So, people have to take a long time to distinguish different names in different parts and times in CUV. 2. An analysis of the eponym translation based on three rules of Skopos Theory This section makes an analysis of the eponym translation in the CUV based on three rules of Skopos Theory respectively. a. An analysis of the eponym translation based on the skopos rule In the Skopos Theory, the first rule of the three rules is skopos rule which is mainly talking about municative purpose. The Chinese translation of the eponym, most of which are literally translated, failing to reach the purpose of munication. Here it will be illustrated by an example. Example 1: Of Israel: of the descendants of parosh: Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah,Eleazar, Hashabiah, and Benaiah. “以色列的人巴錄得子孫中有拉米、耶西雅、瑪基雅、米雅民、以 17 利亞撒、馬基雅、比拿亞 ” A few broken English of the names are just small parts of the examples to show the indigestible names in the Bible. The names sound like western culture rather than Chinese culture and this is the kind of translation without the characteristics of Chinese and the meaning of the name. Also, there is no difference between the male and female on name. For example, a saint in Bible( CUV) , whose name is translated into Chinese as “瑪基雅 ”, is kind of feminine trait. Vice verse, there are also some weird translational female names in CUV, here an example will be presented to illustrate the idea. Example 2: English name: Anna Basemath Dinah Adah Euodia Bernice CUV version: 亞拿 巴實末 拿有 亞大 阿爹 貝尼基 Reversion: 安娜 貝絲瑪 蒂娜 婭妲 尤蒂雅 貝尼 絲 According to the example, we can see, if the translator use the Chinese “亞大 ”, “亞拿 ”, readers can get the information that it is a name. But whether it is a male name or female name, readers cannot get the valid message from it. b. An analysis of the eponym translation based on the coherence rule As the thesis refers, the target text must be translated to be bound up with the target text receivers, given their circumstances 18 and knowledge. That means when there is a translation text based on a source text, the translation texts should make receivers understand, also provide related information and knowledge. According to the coherence rule, the source text is not the most canonical one but only part of the translation provided information. The following example will make an analysis of it. Example 3: 1 雅各 Jecob James 猶大 Judah Judas Jude 2 流便 Reuben 3 馬利亞 Mary The first name as the example shows, the Chinese translation has got two or more kinds of English source, it is easy for people to get confused when they read the different parts of Bible, regarding the two kinds of sources are the same character in the Bible. The second one, as we see, it is not widely accepted by Chinese people because of the first impression given by the name is not a good word in Chinese, but in the Bible, the information it wants to inform is not what the Chinese read. The third one, 馬利亞, actually the character in the Bible is a female, but there is no trait to show that it is a female name. According to the three examples, it is clear that the eponym 19 Chinese translation fails to obey the coherence rule. People are puzzled about the some of the Chinese translation. c. An analysis of the eponym translation based on the fidelity rule Translation carries the function of delivering information. The third rule of the Skopo Theory is the fidelity rule which requires relationship between the translated version and the source text. According to the most Chinese translation of the proper noun in the Bible, we can figure out the literally translated ,to some extent, is directly connect with the source, the original version of English. So in this aspect, the Chinese translation is a success which directly shows the western culture. The following examples of the epomym translation aim to show its fidelity rule. Example 4: 1 Ahab 亞哈 2 Abel 亞伯 3 Boaz 波阿斯 4 Rahab 喇合 As these examples shows, the Chinese translation of the names in CUV is quite different from the Chinese names, and there is no doubt that it is translated from western works rather than originating in China.
