Influences of Different Affective Factors to English Teaching From the analysis of chapter one, we know that the affective factors include four parts. They are interest, attitude, motivation, selfconfidence and anxiety. Different factors have different functions, so different factors definitely have different influences to English teaching. Next, we will talk about the influences of these factors. The Influence of Interest There is a saying in China: interest is the best teacher. As we have learned the definition of interest before, it39。s easy for us to understand that interest is an active and realistic part of people39。s psychology, and it is very important for our study. Our famous educationist Confucius has said,“The person who wants to study is better than who has learned something. The person who is interested in study is better than who wants to study.” American famous psychologist also has said,“The stimulation power of study is the interest.” So, interest is not only the best teacher, but also the catalyst of one39。s continued learning. The lack of interest can even make students have no desire for knowledge. Goethe has said,“without interest we won’t have memory.”And we can39。t form our linguistic habit and train our municational ability without memory. So stimulating students39。 interest of learning English is the key to successful English teaching. The Influence of Attitude The American famous educational psychologist Bloom believes that a student who has a positive attitude can master knowledge more easily and faster. But, there are still many students who are learning with a negative attitude. Changing a student39。s negative attitude and building a new kind of positive attitude are really hard but not impossible. In order to improve the English teaching, teachers should try any possible methods.In fact, some teachers resort to punishments when students fail to meet some requirements. But this way can just lead to little change or result in students’ affective tension and strong aversion. Only when a teacher patiently guides his students to recognize the necessity of changing his attitude, and let the students make their own choices, can the attitude changing be possible. The main measures are as follows. Firstly, putting forward specific requirement to your students in time. For example, when meeting new situation, the teacher should point out the changes of the situation in advance and put forward the importance of changing the attitude. Then, the students can change their former attitude by themselves and adapt to the new situation with a new attitude. Secondly, guiding students to change their wrong attitude by corresponding activities. For example, if students don’t like one kind of subject, the teacher should organize students to take part in activities which will use the knowledge of the subject, make them understand its importance, and try to let them do some relevant evaluation after their practice. Then, their attitude will change gradually. Thirdly, the teachers’ unceasing requirement and timely praise are the precondition of changing a student’s bad attitude into a good one. Because the former bad attitude will persist for some time, we can’t get rid of it without unceasing requirement and timely praise. Fourthly, we’d better make use of the power of the whole class. The class has big influence on each member’s attitude. Whether the whole class can effectively influence a member depends on whether it has great cohesion. If the collective is attractive to its members, and if the requirement of changing the old attitude is consistent,then it can be realized quickly. The Influence of Motivation In language study, motivation and attitude have direct connection. The students who get good grades always have strong study motivation. English study motivation results from a student39。s strong wish and desire of English. It39。s the direct inner power to push forward English study. The English learner with motivation will get a better result, and the English learner who has no motivation always treat English study as a burden. If a teacher knows how to give his students motivation and give them what kind of motivation, he can make the students change from passive learning into active learning. Then the students will be active in class and have high study efficiency. After the students finish their study task successfully, they will get a sense of acplishment and get a stronger study motivation. As we can see, learning motivation is an important element in learning English. A person who has strong motivation is easier to take part in social activity and get more ideas from others. And a student’s strong motivation is the key to a teacher’s excellent teaching. The Influence of Selfconfidence American39。s expert professor Rosenthal once made an experiment at a primary school. In that experiment, he made a list which was named the authoritative psychological test and gave this list to the teacher of his school. On the list, there were the names of those students who have great potential and unusual intelligence. The teacher was happy to tell these students whose names were on the list that they were more talented and intelligent than normal people. But the teacher didn39。t know that the list was made randomly. After 8 months, the professor came back to this school. He found that almost all of the students whose name on the list had a better grades. From the experiment We can see that selfconfidence is an important element in English study and English teaching.
