【正文】 nents, ICC will never be effectual. The Components of ICC Gudykunst and Kim (1992) stated that intercultural munication petence should include such categories as cognitive, affective and behavioral ponents. Some other researchers propose the system should also include strategic petence. Based on the prevalent researchers’ arguments, it is believed in this thesis that ICC involves language petence, cognitive petence, affective petence, operational petence, episodic petence, relational petence, strategic petence.1) Language petenceLanguage petence in this thesis refers to learners’ ability to listen, speak, read, and write in the target language, which indicates that learners are expected to possess certain language skills. These basic language skills are the essential integrated parts of ICC. 2) Cognitive petenceThe cognitive aspect of intercultural munication petence is the mental capacities of prehension and ability to understand the meanings of various and nonverbal codes. It is the knowledge dimension of ICC, which includes such internal capacities as the knowledge of the target language and culture.3) Affective petenceAffective petence facilitates crosscultural adaptation by providing an emotional and motivational capacity to deal with the various challenges of crosscultural exchanges (Kim, 1994). It has something to do with how municators regulate their feelings and emotions to make intercultural munication easier. It includes municators’ willingness and determination to learn the target language and culture. Affective petence also includes municators’ ability to understand and empathize with the emotional and aesthetic sensibilities of the natives.4) Operational petenceClosely linked with cognitive and affective petence is operational petence. According to Kim (1994), the operational petence refers to municators’ capacity to enact or express their cognitive and affective experiences outwardly when munication begins. Communicators’ operational petence is based on their cognitive and affective petence. As a ponent of ICC, the operational petence enables municators to choose an appropriate bination of verbal and nonverbal activities to meet the demands of daily activitiesfrom managing facetoface encounters to seeking appropriate information sources to solve problems.5) Episodic petenceThe concept of episodic petence is newly proposed by sociolinguistics to interpret meanings in context. Just as Forgas (1979) defined, “episode is the stereotypes of the typical interaction order in some social and cultural situation”. Similarly, Gumperz (1982) regards episode as municative routines. Different cultures have different social expectations and interpretive rides of episode.6) Relational petenceRelational petence refers to the ability to establish and maintain a positive relation among municators. It includes abilities to meet municators’ need for autonomy and intimacy, to use verbal and nonverbal means to show concern and interest, to enhance interpersonal attraction, to fully disclose oneself in order to be known by the other interlocutor, to integrate and converge in interaction. Among the studies of ICC, it is suggested by many scholars that ICC should be primarily concerned with relationship building and maintenance. (Ruben, 1976。 Spitzberg, 1994)7) Strategic petenceStrategic petence is put forward by Canale and Swain. This ponent is posed of mastery of verbal and nonverbal municative strategies to pensate for breakdowns in munication due to limiting conditions in actual munication and enhance the effectiveness of munication. (Canale, 1983) Similarly, Stern interprets strategic petence as “the creativity of language used to bridge the gaps between linguistic and sociolinguistic systems and to reach municative goals”. It involves ability to use municative strategies to avoid munication breakdown.Chapter ThreeTHE CULTIVATION OF ICC IN BUSINESS ENGLISH LEARNING The Definition and Characteristics of Business EnglishWith the development of world economy and technology, English bees a sort of world language, and has a dominant position in such areas as business and science. “Business” means mercial activities that people are engaged in as a means of livelihood or profit or an entity in such activities. Generally speaking, business English refers to all the English language used in business activity. In China, business English is mainly used for foreign trade, which is also called Foreign Trade English. Since business English has a professional applicability in its special context, it has its own unique style, usage and format, which is different from other forms of English. It is not a separate form of language。 instead, it’s a form of English which reflects certain social functions and is applied to the business contexts. In other words, it’s a standard form of English which involves all kinds of business activities and which is fit for mercial needs. Jones amp。 Alexander (1994) addresses business English as “English for business” or “English used in business contexts”. In modern world with the frequency of the mercial trading, due to the development of international business, globalization has been accelerated. And in the process of world’s globalization, English, as the most monly used language of the world, has obviously played a more and more important role in the business world today. As a socialfunctioned form of language, business English has a close connection with business knowledge.
