People considered white skin as beauty. Therefore classical white makeup started to appear. Women powdered and put rouge on cheeks to make their faces pretty. In later period, Yang Yu Huan even invented floralpatterned trinket(花鈿 ). At the same time because of the deep influence by Hu custom, natural beauty without makeup once prevailed for a period of time. Song Dynasty Comparing to Tang, Song dynasty’s folkway was very conservative. White makeup(白妝 ) and floralpatterned trinket(花鈿 ) almost faded away. A simple and elegant makeup was popularized. Yuan dynasty Differing from the former dynasties, the makeup in Yuan was more casual. Aulic women in Yuan dynasty preferred wine and simple makeup. However, natural beauty without makeup prevailed among folk women. Ming Dynasty Generally the makeup in Ming dynasty accorded with modern aesthetic standard. Women painted faces with bright tinct. Their lips’ color was natural. Diversified eyebrow makeup still continued to Qing dynasty. Qing Dynasty In Qing dynasty, the makeup varied between aulic and folk women. On one hand noble and aulic women’s make up followed the Qin dynasty’s style. On the other hand folk women’s make up was simple.
