【正文】 rd and endure more miserable life, the pigs give them a mystical reward after their death. The Sugar Candy Mountain represents Christianity. Just as the Sugar Candy Mountain, the government uses the church to manage people in Soviet Union. Chapter Three The Symbolism of the Slogans and the Windmill Another distinct feature of the novel is employing the slogans to deliver the change of pigs. These slogans have much realistic significances. Windmill is a big engineering in animal farm and all of animals look forward to the success. Both of them play symbolic roles in the novel. In this chapter, the thesis tries to deal with the symbolism of the slogans and the windmill. The Symbolism of the Slogans After the rebellion, the pigs set out a principle to manage the animals. Because of the principle has seven points, it is called Seven Commandments. These mandments are their slogans in Animal Farm, everyone must know these slogans. The slogans are written on the tarred wall in great white letter even though there are some spelling mistakes. 1 Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. 2 Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings is a friend. 3 No animal shall wear clothes. 4 No animal shall sleep in a bed. 5 No animal shall drink alcohol. 6 No animal shall kill another animal. 7 All animals are equal. 10 All of animals agree with these slogans and they have another slogan “Four legs good, two legs 9 bad.”11 This slogan is the high summation of Seven Commandments. All animals have to abide by it. The Seven Commandments are laws that ensure Animalism and keep a good order in Animal Farm. The Seven Commandments also in order to make the animals to unite against the humans and prevent animals from following the humans? evil habits. But soon after, the pigs move to the farmhouse and sleep in beds. The other animals remember that there is a mandment that forbids sleeping in beds. Then they go to look at the mandments. But the fourth slogan has changed, there added to some words. When the pigs living in the farmhouse, “ No animal shall sleep in a bed?? is changed to “No animal shall sleep in bed with sheets.” “No animal shall drink alcohol” is changed to “No animal shall drink alcohol to excess”, when the pigs discover the farmer?s whisky. Even though the animals very cold, starving and overwork in this new farm, they remain believe their life are better than they were when ruled by Mr. Jones. In fact, their living conditions do not change better but even worse. The pigs only use these slogans and figures illustrate the success of their new farm. Squealer abuses the animals? poor memories to show their improvement. Again and again, the slogans in animal?s memory are different with the slogan of the wall. But Squealer always says their memory is wrong. Squealer uses language to twist the truth and maintain social. In fact these slogans are tools of spirit rule. As the pigs bee more human, eventually the laws are replaced with “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. Four legs good, two legs better!”12 As the slogans in Animal Farm, there have munist theory in Soviet Union. The government of Soviet Union revises the munist theory so that the policy is suit for capitalist development. The changes of policy make the government deviates from the socialist road. The Symbolism of the Windmill After rebellion, all animals are mistaken in thinking that they are free. They are very happy because they believe the farm belong to them from now on. But it does not last long. Snowball and Napoleon begin to resist each other. One day Napoleon sends some fierce dogs to Snowball then Snowball run away. In order to make the farm richer and the animals work less, Napoleon puts forward a plan that build a windmill. It is really a hard work for those animals to build a windmill, but the animals are told that it would make their life easier. The animals believe that they will have more food and luxuries in future. In Animal Farm, the windmill is a symbol performance the huge energy of the pigs. The windmill 10 is not only a project but also a symbol that showing the pigs amazing ability to control the other animals. The windmill describes the pigs? manipulation skills according to the design of the windmill. During the construction of the windmill the pigs do not do any work and do not help the other animals at all. What?s more, the pigs enjoy all of the good food. But the other kinds of animals work very long hours, and receive very little food. Even though they are socialists, there still have unfair things appear in this farm. When the windmill is destruct, Napoleon says that it is in fact Snowball who destroys it. “Snowball was in a league with Jones from the start! He was Jones?s secret agent all the time,” says Squealer. Then all animals begin to dislike Snowball. The windmill is a powerful object. It is a symbol of showing the pigs control over the other animals. Building a windmill is Snowball?s idea at first. Through the plot of Napoleon steals Snowball?s idea for a windmill in the novel, the windmill can be regard as a symbol of the Soviet FiveYear Plans. The Soviet FiveYear Plan is the idea of Trotsky originally. After suppressing Trotsky from the Soviet Union, Stalin claims that the plan is his idea and he will bring it into operation. On how to develop the Soviet Union, Trotsky and Stalin have many different opinions. In Animal Farm, windmill is the represent of the biggest split between Napoleon and Snowball (Stalin and Trotsky). Napoleon very contempt the idea of builds a windmill, we can see it at this sentence “The whole farm was deeply divided on the subject of the windmill… then suddenly he urinated over the plans and walked out without a word.”13 At the same time, the windmill is the symbol for the dec
