Translation of Place Names from English into Chinese The translation of place names from English to Chinese also mainly uses the way of transliteration .In order to avoid confusion ,most of these names have established official translation .The translator seldom has the chance to translate them at will .So ,he has to look up them in various handbooks of the translation for the place names in English .Some of them are developed from the mon names .But ,even many natives now can not know their sources because of the long time : and the main function of the place names are almost the designating sign .Therefore ,transliteration is the major way to translate them ,for instance , London 倫敦 Belfast貝爾法 斯 特 Leeds利茲 Scotland蘇格蘭 Virginia弗吉尼亞 （靳梅林， 277） The genral stf(1mpoyidvc,uh)0jb。5wT16 Some place names consist of mon words or properplus—monwords ,and the mon words still give some meanings or some implications .So this kind of place names in English should be partly transliterated ,for example , The United Stated of America美利堅(jiān)合眾國(guó) Cambridge劍橋 New Zealand 新西蘭 And even some of them are translated literally, for example, the Black Sea 黑海 the Cape of Hope 好望角 the Pacific Ocean 太平洋 For some historical reasons or because of the foreign writer’s individual translation ,many Chinese places have so –called foreign manes .When the translator meets with them , he should translate with the present official place names instead of transliterating them according to the English spelling .Please see the following examples : Macao澳門 Port Arthur 旅順 the Bridge of Macro Polo 盧 溝橋 Amoy廈門 Ⅴ . Some suggestions on Proper Nouns Translation Name translation is not easy, especially proper name translation .If a man wants to be a translator, he must posses much knowledge（秦貽） . A. Conclusion By looking up many books or magnizes , the writer sums up the some principles on proper names translation, hoping that the reader can pay more attention to them and try his best to sum up more principles on proper names translation. Whether proper nouns translation is accurate or not, it decides the long value of Chinese documents. Nowadays, with China taking part in WTO, more and more foreign people or places are known by Chinese， and also more and more Chinese people have foreign names, in order not to cause confusion people should take notice of the accurate translation of proper nouns39。 translation . Ⅱ .Principles of Proper Nouns’ Translation For a long time, the proper nouns’ translation is in a mess as there are no unfilled rules of proper names’ translation .After the new republic of China setting up, although many rules have been formulated ,it is unnecessary to republish the books which have published before and to revise the translation name ,so it is also in a confusion situation . For example: Chicago :詩(shī)家谷 (now ：芝加哥 ) Logic : 邏輯學(xué) ，名學(xué) (translated by Yan Fu) Balzac :白爾石克 (now ：巴爾扎克 ) This great confusion es, as we analyze all the cases, from the transliteration of all proper names, from the English spelling and English pronunciation, the variation in the spoken sound of the Chinese characters used in the translated names, the great number of homonyms in Chinese, and the mixed use of the old and new translated name. For a remedy, we have tried to set up four principles for our translators: A. To adopt the Established Popular Translation Names（郭著章， 92） : 1.
