But, where are the questions of the former translation? III. Translation of Personal Names The person name is an addressing sign for the individual member of human being. It is very important in the social munication .No matter what form the person name is in, its basic function is almost the same. Knowing and addressing the counterpart’s name is often the beginning point of the personal munication .With the continuous increase of the cultural exchanges , more and more people need to make face –to –face munication or to work or to live in the foreign cultures ,and the significance of the translation of person name bees more and more obvious. For the difference of languages and cultures, there are different person names among different cultures. Every nation has its unique way to name its natives. A. The Difference Between English and Chinese Names 1. The Phoic Forms A Chinese name usually consists of two, three or four characters and each character forms a separate syllable most of the English names have much more syllables than Chinese ones. 2. Family Name(包惠南， 57) Many Chinese family names are taken from the names of plants such as 李(plum), 柳 (willow)and 楊 (popular)。 of animals such as 羊 (goat),馬 (horse)and 牛(ox)。 and so on . On the other hand, the English family names are no less varied than the Chinese family names. Some of them are taken from names of places, such as London, Cloverdale and Comber land。 some of them e from names of animals or plants, such as Lamb, Cotton and Hawthorn。 some of them are derived from the names of colors, such as Green, Black and white。 and Field, House, Water, etc are also English family names. B. The Same Point between English and Chinese names In both Chinese and English ,people can often judge the sexes of the persons according to their given names .In Chinese ,it has characters such as 芬，珍，芳， 麗 for the given names of the female 。and 偉，江，海 for the male .Meanwhile , in English ,the given names such as ,Mary ,Lily ,Jane are used for the female 。and the given names such as ,Peter ,Jack ,Tom ,are used for the male .When translating the person names from English into Chinese ,the translator had better choose the suitable character ,which can indicate the sexes .But ,for translating from Chinese into English with the Chinese Phoic Alphabet ,it is almost impossible to inform the person’s sex through the spellings . C. The Translation of Personal Names from Chinese into English（吳衛(wèi)， 37） 1 .The person name translation from Chinese into English usually uses the Chinese Phoic Alphabet. The family name translated into a word and given name a word, if the given name has two words。 it is no hyphen between the two word in English. The trouble is that all the different names may e out alternatively in the same story or the same paragraph. In order that there is no trace of ambiguity in the whole translation , the translator has to ward off any possible misplacement .In this connection ,he may translate only one of the different names and use it for all the rest of translate all of them and give an explanation to each by way of a footnote. D. Translation of the personal names from English into Chinese（吳衛(wèi)， 37） 1. The English name has a different arrangement from the Chinese one. But it is still transliterated as the original writing order, such as: Charles Dickens 查爾斯 . 狄更斯 Franklin Delano Roosevelt 富蘭克林 .德拉諾 .羅斯福 A dot is placed between the given names and the family name .When there are two given names, a hyphen is placed between them. 2.
