Moreover, after Tess had experienced a hard time in Linkwire, she heard Angel?s brother?s talking about her unlucky marriage which deeply hurt her and she decided to go back to Linkwire. Another occasion is that after the incident of being abandoned by Angel, Tess found her father?s death. It was all her duty to feed the family. Therefore, she had to e back to Alec. Following that incident was the return of Angel. No one knows that it is not long before Tess?s dearth and if Angel keeps staying in Brazil, Tess will never be stimulated to kill Alec. The pitiful ending of the novel leaves us an impression of regretting. When we feel sorry about the experience and lot of the heroine, we also can not help to seek the root of her tragedy. On one side, Tess?s life is tied in a hundred and one ways to the mon customs and feudal code of ethics just at that period of time. Tess of the D’Urbervilles discloses the hypocritical moral standards of the capitalistic society —— humanity, traditional conception and faith can influence everyone a lot. It not only forces her from outside kind of environment, but also infiltrate into her mind. On the other side, her own personality kicks her good luck away. Moreover, Hardy adds some of his own spirit into this creation: his fatalism. Tess of the D’Urbervilles is such a heartrending and profounding fulllength novel. “ I put my best in this book.” Hardy said when he had just finished the book. We can prehend his words from several points of view. First, it is said that tragedy can purify people?s mind because lots of the readers were moved by the story and meanwhile they put forward their profound considerations. Second, indeed， Tess, the heroine of the novel, who has the charm deep in her soul wins her the greatest and most lively image in the world cultural gallery. However, her youth, brevity, charm, cleverness, goodness and the quality of persisting in running after sincerely and holy love requite her with discard of her husband. And her hardworking, honesty, struggling over her fate yet can not change her tragic life. In a word, the tragedy is her destiny. It is also where the beauty is.
