Do you si ng Karaoke and pretend you are a famous singer l ike Song Zuying or Li u H uan? To be honest, a lot of peopl e attach great importance to be ing ri ch and famous. But just now do people form a band? Many musici ans meet and form a band because they li ke to wri te and pl ay thei r own may start as a group of hi ghschool students, for whom practi sing their music i n someone’s house i s the fi rst step to fam e. Sometim es they may pl ay to passersby i n the street or subway so that they can earn some extra money for themsel ves or to pay for their i nstruments. Later they m ay give performances in pubs or clubs, for which they are paid i n cash. Of course they hope to m ake records i n a studio and sel mi l ions of copi es to bee m il lionai res! However, there was one band that started i n a different way. It was caled the Monkees and began as a TV show. The musici ans were to play jokes on each other as wel as pl ay music, most of which was based loosely on the Beatles. The TV ani zer had planned to fi nd four musici ans who could act as wel l as si ng. They put an adverti sement in a newspaper looking for rock m usi cians, but they coul d onl y find one who was good enough. They had to use actors for the other three m em bers of theband. As some of these actors coul d not si ng wel l enough, they had to rely on other musici ans to help them . So during the broadcasts they just pretended to sing. Anyhow their performances were humorous enough to be copi ed by other groups. They were so popular that their fans formed cl ubs in order to get more fami li ar with them . Each week on TV, the Monkees would play and si ng songs written by other m usi cians. However, after a year or so in whi ch they became more seri ous about their work, the Monkees started to play and sing their own songs li ke a real band. Then they produced thei r own records and started touring and playing thei r own m usi c. In the USA they became even more popul ar than the Beatles and sol d even more records. The band
