【正文】 , so you m ay be able to concentrate on photography l ater i f you ?re interested. ZY: Thank you. N ot onl y am I i nterested i n photography, but I tok an am ateur course at uni versity to update m y skil s. H X: Good. ZY: What do I need to remem ber when I go out to cover a story? H X: You need to be curi ous. O nl y i f you ask m any di fferent questi ons wi l you acqui re al l the i nformation you need to know. We say a good journali st m ust have a good “nose” for a story. That m eans you m ust be abl e to asess when peopl e are not teli ng the whol e truth and then try to di scover i t. They must use research to inform them sel ves of the mi ssi ng parts of the story. ZY: What shoul d I keep i n mi nd? H X: H ere es m y l i st of dos and don?ts: don?t m i s your deadli ne, don?t be rude, don?t tal k too m uch, but m ake sure you l isten to the i ntervi ewee careful y. ZY: Why is l i steni ng so im portant? H X: Wel , you have to li sten for detai led facts. Meanwhil e you have to prepare the next questi on dependi ng on what the person says. ZY: But how can I li sten careful y whi l e taki ng notes? H X: Thi s is a tri ck of the trade. If the i ntervi ewee agrees, you can use a recorder to get the facts strai ght. It?s al so useful i f a person wants to chal l enge you. You have the evi dence to support your story. ZY: I see! H ave you ever had a case where someone accused your journali sts of geti ng the wrong end of the sti ck? H X: Yes, but i t was a l ong tim e ago. Thi s i s how the story goes. A footbal l er was accused of taki ng m oney for deli beratel y not scori ng goals so as to l et the other team wi n. We went to i ntervi ew hi m. H e deni ed taki ng m oney but we were skepti cal. So we arranged an i ntervi ew between the footbal l er and the m an supposed to bri be hi m. When we saw them together we guessed from the footbal er?s body l anguage that he was not tel li ng the truth. So we wrote an articl e suggesti ng he was guil ty. It was a dil em ma because the footbal l er coul d have demanded dam ages i f we were wrong. H e tri ed to stop us publi shi ng i t but l ater we were proved ri ght. ZY: Wow! That was a real “scoop”. I?m l ooking forward to m y first assi gnm ent now. Perhaps I?l l get a scoop too! H X: Perhaps you wi l . You never know. GETTING TH E “SCOOP” “qui ck,” sai d the editor. “Get that story ready. We need i t i n thi s edi ti on to be ahead of the other newspapers. Thi s i s a scoop. ” Zou Yang had just e back i nto the office after an i ntervi ew wi th a fam ous film star. “Di d he real y do that?” asked som eone from the Internati onal N ews Departm ent. “Yes, I?m afraid he did, ” Zhou Yang answered. He set to work. Hi s first task was to write hi s story, but he had to do i t careful ly. Al though he real ized the man had ben lyi ng, Zhou Yang knew he m ust not acuse hi m directl y. He woul d have to be acurate, Conci se to! H e knew how to do that. Months of trai ning had taught hi m to write wi th no wasted words or phrases. He sat down at his puter and began to work. The first person who saw his articl e was a seni or editor from hi s departm ent, . He checked the evi dence, read the article and passed it on to the copyedi tor. She began to edit the pi ece and design the main headline and smal er heading. “This wi l l ook very good on the page,” i ts bi nati on of gases had li ttl e oxygen l eft. Hi t by a l ack of fresh ai r, m y head ached. Just as I tri ed to m ake the necessary adjustm ent to thi s new si tuati on, Wang Ping appeared. “Put on thi s m ask, ” he advi sed. “It?l l m ake you feel m uch better. ” H e handed i t to m e and im m edi atel y hurri ed m e through to a smal room nearby for a rest. I fel t better i n no ti m e. Soon I was back on m y feet agai n and fl owi ng hi m to col l ect a hoveri ng carri age driven by puter. These carri ages fl oat above the ground and by bendi ng or pressi ng down i n your seat, you can m ove swi ftl y. Wang Pi ng fastened m y safety bel t and showed m e how to use i t. Soon I coul d fl y as fast as him. H owever, I l ost si ght of Wang Pi ng when we reached what looked l ike a large m arket because of too m any carri ages fl yi ng by i n al di recti ons. H e was swept up i nto the centre of them . Just at that mom ent I had a “tim e l ag” fl ashback and saw the area agai n as it had been i n the year AD 2020. I reali zed that I had been transported i nto the future of what was sti l m y hom etown! Then I caught sight of Wang Pi ng agai n and fl ew after him . Arri vi ng at a strangel ooking house, he showed m e i nto a l arge, bri ght cl ean room. It had a green wal , a brown fl oor and soft li ghti ng. Suddenl y the wal l m oved –it was made of trees! I found l ater that thei r l eaves provi ded the room with m uchneeded oxygen. Then Wang Pi ng fl ashed a swi tch on a puter screen, and a tabl e and som e chai rs rose from under the fl oor as if by magi c. “Why not sit down and eat a l ittl e?” he sai d. “You m ay fi nd thi s di ffi cul t as i t i s your fi rst tim e travel tri p. Just rel ax, si nce there i s nothi ng pl anned on the tim etabl e today. Tom orrow you?l l be ready for som e visi ts.” H avi ng sai d thi s, he spread som e food on the tabl e, and produced a bed from the fl or. After he l eft, I had a bri ef m eal and a hot bath. Exhausted, I sli d i nto bed and fel fast asl eep.
