formulation of the Community Conditioning Hypothesis. Standardized Aquatic Microcosm Conditioned Equidistant Outdoor Mesocosm (CEOM). This type of facility is designed to conduct more extensive experiments than can be acplished using laboratory based systems. Shown under construction, the CEOM consists of 24 experimental units that surround a central conditioning tank. The experimental units are arranged in groups of four around the central conditioning tank in a wheel and spoke manner. The migration paths from the central conditioning tank to each experimental unit are equal. The CEOMs were developed by Wayne Landis, April Markiewicz, and Robin Matthews. Conditioned Equidistant Outdoor Mesocosm The individual units are covered in plastic to prevent the rains and wind from disturbing the mesocosm units. These coverings were found to be particularly durable throughout the year. Reliably dosing systems of this size was an issue as mixing was often inplete. The concentration in the water column was similar no matter the dose to the surface. Another issue was the small differences in microclimates within the setting resulting in small temperature and illumination differences among the replicates.
