【正文】 ch kind of city they want?As for this question, Dickens also has his own view. I cannot know it from this novel clearly, but what he is not pleased to see can be clearly read. Charles Dickens writes London by the eyes and speech of characters and the narrator. At the very beginning, the novel describes the portrait of London.……此處刪除多段In addition to above, the house in London is downfalling. “A large house, formerly a house of state, is let off in sets of chambers now and in those shrunken fragments of its greatness”(Dickens 1993:114). The quondam luxury house is the symbol of the state and fortune for aristocracy. However, they bee so bleak which implies the fall of the aristocracy at that time. Especially this case is not a special case, but the slum, TomAllAlone’s, is once the house of aristocracy. Because of the lawsuit or other reasons, they are abandoned and lose the glory, and they are occupied by the displaced people without any care and topple down in silence. The Urge to Keep the Traditional Englishness in the CityThe city bees bustling and prosperous, which maybe the original intention of English. ConclusionThe novel Bleak House, by virtue of the Bleak House, Chesney Wold, the buildings in London, shows the improvement of civilization and the transforming of Englishness. Bleak House maintains the principles of dignified Englishness with simplicity, munality and authentic craftsmanship of medieval English village life. It asserts that life should reliance on the principles of Englishness the old order of the world and the culture of English gentleman and lady. The ideal of Englishness rests on notions of dignity and gentility that are themselves narrowly defined in terms of country house and countryside. In the big wave of the industrial revolution, English society changes drastically. The decline of country and the prosperity of city upset the British inherent values, aesthetics and lifestyle. However, Englishness itself keeps alive in succession. British people struggle in the new and the old, in the tradition and modern, in the utilitarianism and romanticism. They want to be able to keep rural, carefree, natural and simple life, and cannot stop city from developing toward the regulation order and realism. So they promise with the reality, and urge to keep the both sides of country and city life. This is the construction of Englishness in Bleak House. References[1] Baldwin, Stanley.
