ch consider the English news headline as material, and translation as tool. Therefore, the translators should understand the following requirements of English news headline translating:(1) Correct translation of news vocabularies Words are changeable and wide, because news report is involved in politics, business, military, religion, diplomatism and so on. Thus when we are practicing translating, it is the first thing to understand what the English news headlines exactly mean, then translate them with another Chinese word or pick up one meaning that matches the original meaning most, and at the same time to deal with the Chinese translation in a special way. For example, a headline in The New York Times is “Knowing your way around town and having access to important people” (熟悉華盛頓官場的路子,能接近影響重要的人物). The translator should pay attention on the word “access”, because it is a euphemism for “influence” in politics. Another example of “House speaker Thomas tip O’Neil”(眾議院議長托馬斯奧尼爾). According to investment, “tip” is the nickname of O’Neil, so it can be omitted in version. In addition, words such as vogue and jargon are so many in English news headlines that it requires attention and prudence in translation. (2) Sufficient expression and correct understandingWording and phrasing of English news headline have great originality, which often contain special aesthetic and informative function. Therefore, prehensive analysis should be employed when doing EC translation. For instance, there is a headline in China Daily on 17th, March, 2003:News Premier es from grass roots. WenJiabao wins people’s heart with hid downtoearth styleThis headline reported the newly elected Premier WenJiabao. Here, the key factor of EC translation is to understand the word “grass root sufficiently. For the conceptual meaning, “grass root” means “草根”. However, it should not be translated directly. From going through the material of Premier Wen and analysis of the content, we know that “grass root” in fact means the class origin. So the headline can be translated into “ 來自平民的大國總理—溫家寶用其腳踏實(shí)地的工作作風(fēng)贏得人們的愛戴” Principles of English news headline translationIn order to satisfy the specific requirements, many scholars proposed various criteria on translation, from “faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance” of Yanfu to “functional equivalence” of Nida. However, the general criteria of translation apply to any kind of translation. As to English news English news headline translation, there are no ready principles that can be directly adopted. Considering the particularity style feature of news headline, it is important to take into account both the correspondence in lexis and grammar between SL and TL, and functional equivalence. Here, accuracy includes correct dates and time, proper address, persons, exact names and so on.Brevity asks for omission of headline when editing and translating. The use of midget words and phrase headline are the economy of expression. For example, according to the brevity principles, the headline “ What does chip mean for you” will be translated into “集成塊的意義”, but not “微型集成電路塊對(duì)你意味著什么?”.Clarity requires the translation should be free from confusion or ambiguity.Last but not least is esthetical appeal, and this should be considered as the basic principle. Excellent translation contains abundant esthetic value of beauty, and enables readers to read. Esthetical appeal is a valid channel to enhance the readability of news headline with TL. Literal translationAbsolutely, literal translation is the most important way in headline translation. However, literal translation does not mean wordforword translation, but requires one word to one word, group to group, collocation to collocation, and sentence to sentence. “Literal translation is correct and must not be avoided, if it secures referential and pragmatic equivalence to the original.”(Newmark, 2001: 68) This is the guidance of literal translation application in practice. If the meaning of English headline is clear and direct, Chinese readers will understand, literal translation or semiliteral translation can be used and to be the first choice for journalistic translators.
