off her feet. He has impassioned view on art that conform with Marianne’s exactly. However he is also a callous womanizer who left one woman in a dire predicament and who immediately begins to see other woman after separating from Marianne. He must also rely on a good marriage to procure his fortune. When Willoughby says goodbye to Marianne, she is very sad. Life is meaningless to her. Both her heart and her body are hurt deeply. She has no courage to bestir herself. She can’t forget this ‘disaster’. This painful feeling makes her change her view of love. Elinor’s help. Elinor is very far from wishing to dwell on her own feelings, or to represent herself as suffering much, any otherwise than as the selfmand she practices since her first knowledge of Edward’s engagement, might suggest a hint of what is practicable to Marianne. When Willoughby deceives Marianne, Elinor says to him “ Your indifference, however, towards that unfortunate girlI must say it, unpleasant to me as the discussion of such a subject may well beyour indifference is no apology for your cruel neglect of her. Do not think yourself excused by any weakness, any natural defect of understanding on her side, in the wanton cruelty so evident on yours. You must have knows, that while you are enjoying yourself in Devonshire pursuing fresh schemes, always gay, always happy, she is reduced to the extremest indigence ”(Jane Austen, 2001 Sense and Sensibility :210). Elinor encourages her younger sister to bestir herself when she is deep in the sorrow. Elinor was very rational even when Lucy told her the secret. Elinor’ actions make Marianne realize that an emotional view is not the right way for young girls in the love affairs. If the lover she loves have changed minds because of power, money, social position and so on, then the girls will be hurt both heart and body .The right way is to use reason. Having learned from her sisiter, Marianne changes her view of love. Brandon ’s help. Brandon is the affluent suitor and eventual husband of Marianne. Although reserved and not passionate, he has a very good heart and helps out those in distress. His charitable behavior towards Eliza Williams and Edward Ferrars makes him the unnoticed knight in shinning armor. When he knows that Marianne is ill, he is very nervous. “ My objectmy wishmy sole wish in desiring it—I hope, I believe it is—is to be a means of giving fort。 no, I must not say fort—but conviction, lasting conviction to your sister’s mind. My regard to her, for your self, for your mother—will you allow me to prove it, by relating some circumstances which nothing but a very sincere regard—nothing but an earnest desire of being useful—I think I am justified—though where so many hours have been spent in convincing myself that I am right, is there not some reasons to fear I may be wrong? ” (Jane Austen, 2001 Sense and Sensibility :239). Brandon ’s help is also an important factor. When Marianne is ill, Brandon takes care of her carefully. Marianne realizes that Brandon is different from Willoughby . His actions make Marianne knows that Brandon has the sense of duty, he can bring her happiness. At this time Marianne changes her mind. The influence to the people and the society . Although Marianne is just an individual in the society, her attitude towards love reflects the social change. This view of love has an effect both to the people and to the society. To the people, rational view of love makes them more independent. When they fall in love with somebody, they are much more rational. They can use reason to deal with things. Reason makes the people stronger and maturer. To the society, if there are more rational people, the order of the society will not be chaotic. People will have more time and energy to do other things. Then the society will bee a harmonious one. Conclusion: Sense and Sensibility is a famous work of Jane Austen.
