【正文】 majority of the teachers in Ankang University still use the traditional method to teach listening. The traditional method is to play a tape several times for the students, then involve them in the relative exercises—answer prehension questions or make multiplechoice. The main task of the teacher is to check the answers and explain the difficult issues. This kind of teaching method focuses on the result, that is, to decide whether the students’ answers are right or wrong. In this way, what the students learn has little differences from what they get from reading class. Their listening prehension ability has only made minimal improvement. What should be mentioned is that many classroom exercises for listening prehension demand no response until the end of fairly long stretches of speech, so that when they e, these responses are very largely a test of memory rather than of prehension. It is helpless to improve students’ listening ability. Less interactive activities in the Class On one hand, in a listening class, the teachers in Ankang University usually play a role as to simply play the tape recorder and check the students’ answers. Few teachers design enough interactive activities for students to practice their listening ability. Therefore, most students in Ankang University bee passive even bored listeners because of the lack of participation in the process of listening. Gradually they lose motivation and interest or have a socalled panic feeling when listening. On the other hand, students in Ankang University seldom cooperate with their peers. Perhaps that is because most students hold the view that other classmates will go beyond them if they have learned about their learning methods. Therefore, the teachers in Ankang University should help the students set up friendly and cooperative atmosphere in the learning process and let them know the significance of cooperation in the real world.Through investigation, the author finds in Ankang University there are about 64 English teachers in the Department of Foreign Language, and some teachers don’t teach. Those who can teach English are about 50, but there are about 10000 students in Ankang University. Each teacher needs to teach 200 students on average, they do not have enough time and energy to design all kinds of interesting activities. If teachers in Ankang University can well design most of the activities according to students’ characteristics, and the students in Ankang University can well cooperate with each other, the results must be better. Problems concerning students in listening learning In august 1937, Mao Zedong said “The external works through the internal.” Ankang University students’ poor English listening is largely caused by students themselves. Through the survey of 500 students in Ankang University, the author finds the following problems: No English environment British social anthropologist Malinowski said in 1923 that language is deeply rooted in the cultural display and the customs of the peoples’ lives。 language can not be separated from the environment in which it is created. If one wants to learn English well, a good atmosphere is needed, but through the survey the author finds the English atmosphere in Ankang University is not good. Although during the class, more than 60% of the teachers in Ankang University try to improve students’ listening ability by sitting in a listening environment, saying English as much as possible, and letting them do daily report at the beginning of the class and so on. But after class, nearly 99% of the students in Ankang University use Chinese, their mother tongue, to municate with others. On the one hand, they can’t use English frequently to express their opinions, and they get used to speaking Chinese. On the other hand, the people who live with them seldom speak English, so they think it is unnecessary to speak English in daily life. Through the survey the author also finds that from the students investigated, they say students rarely have chance to speak and to do listening exercises after class. And if they speak English, other students may even laugh at them, so they do not have the atmosphere to speak and to listen to pure English. They say there has English Corner in Ankang University, but they don’t want to go, and some students go there is because they have to do so, if not they would be published. They say there are students who often go to English Corner, but they don’t speak English, because they dare to open their mouth, they just want to use the “opportunity” to make friends.Thus, few people speak English, few English can be heard. And it is a disadvantage for students in Ankang University to improve their listening ability. Lack of autonomy of practicing listening As is known to all, listening is important in foreign language learning and the classroom teaching is the main way for most students to practice their English listening, but class time is limited. In Ankang University, there are times that students from two classes have listening class together. In the class, the teachers can’t afford enough chances to everyone to practice their listening, they can just try their best to teach students how to practice listening and improve listening ability. Although after class, about 75% of the students in Ankang University do what their teachers ask to, less than % of them can keep practicing it day by day. That is to say their autonomy of learn English listening is not strong. Inappropriate listening materials Because of the increasing importance of English, many listening materials appear in our study, such as English films, songs, talkshows, broadcast and so on. In fact, most students choose translated films instead of original films, because the original film is hard for them to understand the development of characters and plots in stories.
