Thi s m eans goi ng back to the pl ace where we l eft the fami l y sl eepi ng i n a tree the ni ght before. Everybody si ts and waits i n the shade of the trees whi l e the fam il y begins to wake up and m ove of. Then we fol ow as they wonder i nto the of the tim e,chim ps either feed or cl ean each other as a way of showi ng l ove i n thei r fam il y. Jane worns us that our grou i s goi ng tobe very tired and di rty by the afternoon and she is ri , the eveni ng makes i t al worthwhil e. We watch the m other chim pand her babi es play i n the tree. Then we see them go to sl ep together i n thei r nest for the ni ght. We real ize that the bond between m em bers of a chi m p fam il y i s as strong as i n a hum an fam il y. N obody before Jane ful l y understood chim p behavi our. She spent years observi ng and recordi ng thei r dail y acti vi ti es. Si nce her chil dhood she had wanted to work with anim als i n thei r own environm ent. H owever,thi s was not easy. When she fi rst arrived i n Gom be i n 1960, i t was unusual for a wom an to li ve i n a forest. Onl y after her m other cam e to hel pher for the first few m onths was she al owed to begi n her er work changed the way peopl e thi nk of chim ps. For exam pl e, one im portant thi ng she di scovered was that chim ps hunt and eat m eat. Until then every thought chim ps onl y eat fruit and nuts. She also di scovered how chi m ps muni cate wi th each other, and her study of their body language hel ped her work out thei r soci al system . For forty years Jane Goodal has beenoutspoken about maki ng the rest of the worl d understand and respect the l i fe of these anim als. I enjyed Engl ish , bi ol ogy, and chemi stry at school, but whi ch one should I choose to study at uni versi ty ?i di d not know the answer unti l one eveni ng when I sat down at the puter to do som e research on great wom en of Chi na. By chance I came across an articl e about a doctor cal ed Lin Qiaozhi, a specalist in women?s diseases. She lived from 1901 to 1983 . It sem ed that she had been very busy i n her chosen career , travli ng abored to study as wel l as writi ng books and arti cl ne of them caught m y eye. It was a sm al book expl aini ng how to kepi ng babi es cl ean, heal thy and free from si di d she wri te that?Who were the wom en that Li n Qi aozhi thought needed thi s advi ce?I l ooked careful y at the text and real i ze that i t was i ntended for wom en i n the countrysi de. Perhaps i f they had an em ergency they coul d not reach a doctor. Suddenly it hit me how difficul t it was for a woman to get medical training ata that time. That was a generation when girls? educati on was al ways pl acred decond to boys?. Was she so m uch cl everer than anyone el se?Further readi ng m ade m e reali ze that i t was hard work and determi nati on as wel as her gentl e nature that got her i nto m edi cal school .What m ade her suceed l ater on was the ki ndness and consideration she showed to al l her patiens. There was story after story of how Lin Qiaozhi, tired after a day?s work,went l ate at ni ght to deli ver a baby for a pool fami ly who coul d not pay her. By now I coul d not wai t to fi nd out m ore about her . I di scovered that Lin Qi aozhi had devoted her whol e li fe to herpati ens and had chosen not to have a fami ly of her own. Instead she m ade sure that about 50, 000 babi es were safel y del i vered. By thi s tim e I was very exci ted. Why not study at m edical col l ege l i ke Lin Qi aozhi and carry on her good work?It was sti l not too l ate for me to i m prove m y studi es, prepare for the uni versi ty entrance examinations , and … ELIZABETH FRY When the Quaker El i zabeth m ari ed Joseph Fry, i t seemed as i f her li fe woul d be fortabl e and owever, Eli zabeth was not content with her easy l i fe and her growing fami l y. She saw m any poor peopl e li vi ng near her and she wanted to hel p them . One day she was asked to vi si t a pri son . At fi rst the pri son offi cers di d not want to l et her visi t the women pri soners because they feared the pri soners woul d attack her, but Eli zabeth was not afrai d. She real i zed that the pri soners behave badl y because they were treated li ke anim al s. They had no beds, cl ean cl othes, food or heati ng. Any chi l d born i n pri son had to stay there and had no chance of an educati on. Thi s m eant they woul d probably have to beg or steal when they grew up and then woul d return to pri son. So the fi rst thing El i zabeth di d was to provi de food, cl ean cl othes and straw for beds. Later she began a pri son school for the chil l dren and taught the wom en to sew,kni t and make goods to sel . In thi s way they abl e to m ake a li ttl e m oney for them sel ves and gai n som e l i ndnesshelped her gai n the fri endshi pof prisoners and they began to try to im prove thei r condi ti ons for themsel ves. Later Eli zabeth was asked to go to the l eaders of Bri tai n to di scuss how to im prove the condi ti ons for pri soners。 O
