1 Mature stage 1 Hypermature stage 1 1 1 Posterior subcapsular cataract Visual deterioration early, slower, Posterior subcapsular cataracts are located in the cortex near the central posterior capsule. They tend to cause visual symptoms earlier in their development owing to involvement of the visual axis . 1 1 Posterior subcapsular cataract Common symptoms include glare and reduced vision under bright lighting conditions. This lens opacity can result also from trauma, corticosteroid use (topical or systemic), inflammation, or exposure to ionizing radiation. 1 Nuclear cataract Lower incidence, younger , slower, myopia 1 Nuclear cataract 1 Diagnosis of the senile cataract Slitlamp examination (dilated pupil) lens opacity 1 1 Treatment 1. Medical treatment No medical treatment has been found that will retard or reverse the underlying chemical changes that occur in cataract formation. However, some recent evidence suggests a protective effect of estrogen use on the lenses of postmenopausal women. 1 Treatment 2. Surgical treatment Preoperative evaluation 1.
