【文章內(nèi)容簡介】 a mother should be.To start with, she is narrowminded and elegant, egocentric and hypocritical. She changes the name of Benjy, on purpose of lessen her responsibility for giving birth to a changeling. In the whole story she always appears with morbidity and weariness. She plains: “I am not one of those women who can stand things” (SF, 7). Besides, she indulges herself in selfpity and mourns, “I know I am nothing but a burden to you. But I’ll be gone soon. Then you will be rid of my bothering” (SF, 75).In her eyes, Benjy is the punishment from God. Therefore, she changes the child’s name from “Maule” to “Benjy” after she finds out Benjy is retarded, letting Benjy appearing little related with her Basbe family. Thus we can see that she does not care about her children at all. In the novel, Quentin records as following, “If I have a mother, I could call her mother loudly.” The painful memory of Quentin reflects his misery caused by lack of maternal love. In other words, without the selfishness of Mrs. Compson, Caddy would not act that important for Quentin, and at the same time, Quentin also would not choose to mitted suicide for losing Caddy.Additionally, Mrs. Compson is not a petent mother, wife and hostess. Her mind is poisoned by patriarchal society, looking forward to be a “l(fā)ady” and believing that virginity is the most important thing for a “l(fā)ady”. She not only restrains herself with the “l(fā)ady” doctrines, but also preaches to people around her. Her marriage is not a thing that matters happiness, for Mr. Compson is an alcoholic and there little mutual support and love between. Even though, Mrs. Compson cannot nerve divorce Mr. Compson. After loosing husband, she has been in bed all the time, and gives the priority to Jason to manage their family. That shows Mrs. Compson’s unawareness of feminism, let alone fighting against the criterion which is given by mandominated society. Mrs. Compson is a sacrificial lamb of southern patriarchal society. In return, she makes a vicious circle by instill the socalled concept of “l(fā)ady” to her daughter, making her another victim of mandominated society. Caddy gives out her first kiss at the age of fifteen which is seen by her mother gonging against the concept of southern “l(fā)ady”. When she caught that, she “went around the house in a black dress and a veil and even Father could not get her to say a word except crying and saying her little daughter was dead.” Instead of guidance, she sent Jason to supervise Caddy, forbidding her associating with boys. Based on the previous analysis, Mrs. Compson can be seen as a producer and promoter for breaking down of the Compson family. Unawareness does not represent neutrality and passiveness。 instead, Mrs. Compson persuades and prevents the feminism. Conservative feminism CaddyCaddy was the central character in The Sound and the Fury. There was no separate chapter to express her thoughts, but everything was connected with her. From Benjy to Jason, the narration of each of them reflected what Caddy’s life was like. As her mother, Caddy also carries dual personality, as revolt and promise. She dooms to be a tragedy. In the novel, Faulkner uses multipleangled narration to express Caddy’s tragedy, and the causes of it mainly es from her family, Benjy, her youngest brother’s plete dependence on her. Quentin, her elder brother, who has a special affection for Caddy, thinks excessively highly of her virginity. What Caddy had suffered causes his loss of mental balance。 at last, he chooses to mit suicide. Besides, her mother and brother Jason treat her heartlessly. The other cause was the backward feudalism and traditional code. All of these turned Caddy into a promiscuous, degenerate woman from a pure girl. To begin with the pressure from her family, this story is about the Compson family, which is a prominent one in Jefferson, Mississippi of the South America. Caddy is the only daughter of this family. The first section is narrated by Caddy’s youngest brother Benjy, an idiot, who depended too much on her。 he thought repeatedly that Caddy smells like trees. Most of his memory was centered about her. For example, in the present, Luster is still standing with Benjy as he plays in the stream. Luster told Benjy not to approach the nearby swing because Miss Quentin is there with her boyfriend, the man with the red tie. This makes Benjy recall a time years ago when he meets Caddy and Charlie, her first suitor, kissing on the swing. In his memory, Benjy began to cry very loudly when Caddy’s suitor approaches. Charlie grows angry at Benjy’s intrusion, which upset Benjy even more. Caddy takes Benjy back to the house and cries, because she knew Benjy is upset with her for kissing Charlie. Caddy apologizes to Benjy and washes her mouth out with soap. The gate and schoolgirls remind Benjy of a day in 1910, when he runs out of the house to look at some girls who are walking through the same gate. In his memory, Benjy manages to open the gate and runs through it, he wants to tell the girls how much he misses Caddy, he catching up with one of them. The girl screamed in terror. The scene ends with an unspecified assailant presumably the father of one of the girls attacks Benjy. Mr. Compson wants to know how Benjy get past the gate. He and Jason mulls over the idea of having Benjy castrated as a precaution. All of these things show how pitiful Benjy is! Meanwhile, this is also the tragedy of Caddy, because from the childhood to the age hood, there is only Caddy caring for Benjy. When she divorces, their mother and Jason don not allow her to go home and meet her daughter, little Quentin. But she also cares for Benjy very much。 Caddy is afraid that after their father’s death Benjy will be put in the mental hospital in Jackson by Jason. The second cause es from the backward feudalism and the traditional code. After the civil war, The Northern Capitalism defeated the Southern feudalism. But there was still the residue of the
