y country has its own social background, so their ways of thinking are different. And these differences can be shown by animal words. DifferencesWords are the tools of thought. The differences of way of thinking is just one of the important reasons cause the differences of language. Eastern and western people have different ways of thinking. Many social cognitive psychology’s researches show that the Chinese way of thinking are totality. Westerners’ are singularity. Chinese people focus on the whole, the mon relationship among objects and the specific environment and condition. However, western people focus on the single existence of individual and all the parts which make up of the whole. Chinese have the dialectical thought and emphasize environment and other people’s influence. But westerners have the logical thought and emphasize individual’s influence. Chinese people intent to seek the similarities between two things, but western people intent to seek the differences between two things. Chinese people pursuit that heaven and man should be a unity and emphasize harmony and splitting the differences. Besides, they seek mon ground on major questions while reserving differences on miner ones. Nevertheless, westerners like impress by appearing novel and unique to show their individuality (Liu Yaping, 2001). Such kind of thought and specific character make them full of creative spirit. Why are there these differences? We can use Robert Nisbet’s opinions to analyze. He is an American famous cultural psychologist. Robert Nisbet(1973) stated with ancient Greek and old China, systematically elaborated the source and character caused the differences between Chinese and western thoughts. As far as the social background is concerned, the ancient Greek society emphasized individuality and freedom. The core was individualism. On the contrary, Chinese society emphasized the relationship between individual and society. The core was collectivism (Liu Yaping, 2001). As far as the ecological environment is concerned, Chinese culture was based on the agricultural society. This was a plex hierarchical society. It emphasized rank and harmony. Greek civilization was not totally dependent on agriculture, but hunting and fishing. These needed more demands on individuality. To be suitable with such kind of ecological environment, westerners’ way of thinking is individual, differing from Chinese people’s interpersonal. Talking from the social cognition, the plex social relationships make Chinese people have to put their attention on the outer world, so their self structure is dependent. On the contrary, the social relationship in western countries is simple, so they have the possibility to put their attention on the objects and themselves (Liu Yaping, 2001). In the system of social cognition, social organizations have direct impacts on the cognitive process. The dialectical and logical thoughts are the character of cognitive process. The more important thing is that the character is passed down from generation to generation, having a large effect on people’s psychology and behavior. The cognition of Chinese people centers on situation, but centers on individual in west: Chinese people look at the world with passive attitude. And western people conquer the world with active attitude (Liu Yaping, 2001). ExamplesIn Chinese, it is incredible to regard dog as a family member. They despise dog and use “dog” to describe some bad persons or things. Such as, “狗眼看人低”(gou yan kan ren di, a dog looks down upon human beingsbe damned snobbish)。s encounter with the famous dragon reportedly took place in a small town in Libya. The town was being terrorized by a fierce, firebreathing dragon. To keep it at bay the townspeople had originally fed it sheep. However, the dragon had bee greedier and was now demanding human flesh. Saint George arrived. He slew the dragon with his lance and saved the people there. From the myth, dragon was described as evil in western countries. The example of “cat” also can prove it. In English, we have some expressions related to cat. For instance, “Cats hide their claws.”, “All cats are grey in the dark.”, “The cat shuts its eyes when stealing cream.”, and “There are more ways of killing a cat than by choking it with butter.” From these sentences, we see cat symbolizes deceit and viciousness. But in Chinese, we don’t have such meaning about cat. That was because in western myth, cat was called a “Familiar”, from the medieval superstition that Satan’s favorite form was a black cat. Hence witches were said to have a cat as their familiar. The superstition may have arisen from the classical legend of Galenthias who was turned into a cat and became a priestess of Hecate. In the English mythology, cat can even affect the change of the weather, as the saying goes, “to rain cats and dogs” and “the cat has a gale of wind in her tail”。 and thou art as whales in the seas。 Chinese people realize that their power is too weak in front of nature and society, and thus they need to turn to gods for help. The former was originated in the sense of guilt, while the latter one was originated in reverence. Western religion has absolutely exclusiveness, but Chinese religion has relativity and patibility. (Zheng Chunmiao, 1994). In the west, one people just can believe in only one God and one religion. It’s illegal that there’s another religion, and anyone who believe in that must be punished. In China, because it doesn’t involve whoever is given mission by God, no religion has higher status than another. Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism get along well. And they have more freedom in choosing which gods to worship.Because the beliefs are different between China and western countries, the people’s characters have show
