【正文】 sad person. “Black Friday” refers to an unlucky Friday. Because this is the day of Crucifixion for Christian before Easter. Second, black means darkness, evil and cattiness. For instance, “black money”(黑錢) , “black market”(黑市) , “black list”(黑名單) . In China, different from English, the colour black has positive meaning. For instance, the actor Zhangfei in Peking Opera, whose face is black, which shows the man?s serious and justice. Another famous hero in history is “黑臉包公 ”, That Bao Zheng is called black face is not only his skin colour is black but also speaks highly of his justice. There are many other phrases used black as positive words, like “black horse”(黑馬) , means visitors who achieves the success out of people?s mind in business or game. 9 4. Comparison of Colour Words Between Chinese and English Lyons and Leech think that sense is just a part of meaning. Conceptual meaning is the basic meaning of colour words. Due to different cultural background, words, especially the colour words may have two or more meanings. Thus, it is difficult to find exact right translation. One reason is the colour term itself. Another reason is cultural connotation and traditional custom. In next chapter, I will show the parison of colour words? conceptual meaning. Colour Words Having Same Meaning but Different Colour Terms Sometimes, a same colour means different meaning in Chinese and English. Sometimes, different colour terms have the same meaning. For instance, “black tea” in English, we can not translate to“黑茶” , but“紅茶” . Brown bread is a kind of bread baked in black, not in brown. These phrases es from native customs. Every translator should pay attention to these. Another example,“紅眼病” in Chinese, we can not translate to “red eye”. “紅眼病” means envy or the man who is jealous. But in English, they use “green with envy” or “green eyed”. That is because in western culture, they think green is a liver colour than other colour. So green means envy. The Englishment of 《紅樓夢》 is called The Story of the Stone by David Hawkes. The reason that he does not use red in title translation is talk about in last chapter. In the Englishment, he translates “怡紅公子” and “怡紅院“ as green boy and green delights. He avoids misunderstanding owe to different colour. The Same Colour with Same Meaning As the same human live in the same colorful word, Chinese and English has same feeling to same colour. Thus, there are many same colour terms has same meaning. For instance, “blue print”(藍圖) , “blue collar”(藍領(lǐng)) , “white collar”(白領(lǐng)) , “black market”(黑市) and so on. 10 No Corresponding Meaning in Each Other’s Culture Sometimes, we can not find the corresponding colour words in each other?s language. For example, blue stocking才 女 , green finger好園藝師 , a red letter day 重要的日子 and so on. And 白開水 boiled water,白天 day time,黃道吉日 lucky day,黃瓜 cucumber. 5 Translation Strategies of Colour Terms The Goal of Translation In translation, linguistic mistakes has a close relationship to the language transfer. Language transfer (also known as L1 interference, linguistic interference, and cross meaning) refers to speakers or writers applying knowledge from their native language to a second language. It is most monly discussed in the context of English teaching and learning, but it can occur in any situation when someone does not have a nativelevel mand of a language, as when translating into a second language (Selinker, 1972). So, what is the goal of translation? It is make the readers understand the full meaning of source text. According to different culture between two different culture, the goal is hardly to achieve. The great translator Yan Fu(嚴復(fù)) said “譯事三難:信、達、雅,求其信已大難矣,顧信矣不達,碎譯猶不譯也,則達尚焉。 These have little difference from Berlin and Kay?s definition of basic colour terms. Chinese scholar Yao xiaoping and Liu danqing had a deep research on colour terms. They find Chinese 10 basic colour terms according to Berlin and Kay?s principle. They are 白 (white),赤 (red),黃 (yellow),綠 (green),青 (blue),玄、黑 (black),粉紅 (pink),灰 (gray),褐 (brown),橙 (orange)。 unique ways of understanding the world. (Benjamin Lee, 1936) Owe to different cultural background, a same colour word, like “red”, “紅” in Chinese, has pletely different meaning. As we all know that, the colour terms, except the word which is used to describe colour, are used as a device of metaphor or simile in daily life. That means that the cultural connotation behind colour word is more important than the colour word itself. In this way, we can know that knowing the culture hiding in colour terms is essential for everyone who wants to translate colour terms in text. What Is Culture? What is culture? The question is discussed by scholars in eastern and western since ancient times till now. However, we can not get a exact definition of culture. I think that is because we are always in the way of developing, so it is so difficult to give a perfect definition. In western, most people agree with Edward Burt Tylor?s definition. He defines that culture is that plex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals and other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society in his book Primitive Culture in 1871(Edward Burt Tylor, 1871). Culture is a unity of capabilities and habits in western people? thinking. 3 In eastern, especially in China, “culture” , “文化” in Chinese, is a word which exists in ancient China. The original meaning of 文化 is “以文教化” , which means educating people by culture. We can e a conclusion, there is a familiar understanding of culture in both Chinese and English. So, what causes that Chinese and English same colour terms have different cultural connotation? The Factors Causing Cultural Differences in Chinese and English Colour Terms As
