Sad Love Story Li Fang was heartbroken. It was Val etine’s Day and H u Ji n had sai d she woul d m eet him at the coffee shop after work. But she di dn’t turn up. She coul d be with her fri ends ri ght now l aughi ng at him . She sai d she woul d be there at seven o’ clock, and he thought she woul d keep her word. He had l oked forward to m eeti ng her al day, and now he was al on with hi s roses and chocol ates, l i ke a fool . Wel l, he ws not goi ng to hol d hi s breath for her to apol ogi ze. H e woul d drown hi s sadness i n coffee. It was obvi ous that the m anager of the coffee shop was wai ti ng for Li Fang to l eave – he wi ped the tabl es, then sat down and turned on the TV – just what Li Fang needed! A sad Chi nese story about lost l ove. The randaughter of the Goddess of H eaven vi si ted the earth. H er nam e was Zhinu, the weaving fi rl . ( “We coul d be li ke that, “ thought Li Fang. ) When the Goddess of H eaven knew that her granddaughter was m ari ed to a hum an, she becam e very angry and m ade the weavi ng gi rl return to H eaven. Fi ndi ng that Zhi nu was heartbroken, her grandm other final y deci ded to l et the coupl e cross the Mi l ky Way to m eet once a year. Magi pi es m ake a bri dge of thei r wi ngs so the coupl e can cross the ri ver to m eet on the seventh day of the senveth l unar m onth. Peopl e i n Chi an hope that the weather wi l be fi ne on that day, because i f i t i s rai ni ng, i t means that zhi nu i s weepi ng and the coupl e won’t be abl e to m eet. The announcer sai d, “ Thi s i s the story of Qi qi ao Festival. When foreigners hear about the story they cal i t a Chi nese Val enti ne’s story. It’s a fi ne day today, so I hope you can al m eet the one you l ove. ” As Li Fang set off for hom e, he thought , “ I guess H u Ji n doesn’t l ove m e. I’ just throw these fl owers and chocol ates away. I don’t want them to remi nd m e of her. ” So he di d. As he sadl y passed the tea shop on the corner on hi s wasy hom e, he heard a voi ce cal li ng him . There was H uji n waving at hi m and cali ng, “Why are you so l ate? I’ ve been wai ti ng for you for a l ong tim e! An I have a gi ft for you!” What woul d he do? H e had thrown away her Val enti ne fi ges! She woul d never fi ve him . The music and li ghts of the Carnival conti nue, but after a whol e day of watchi ng parades, ridi ng i n horse cari ages and li steni ng to the musi c, their feet are freezi ng and their noses are red. Every year, hundreds of thousands of peopl e e to Quebec to take part i n the weel l ong winter festival, the bi ggest in the worl d. Everyone who es must be prepared to keep moving. As i t is to cold to stand and watch for long. Earl y i n the m orni ng, you can watch the snowboarding peti ti ons on the hi l overlooking the ri ver. Competi tors speed down the track and through the ai r as though they could fly. The m ore brave of heart may try the canoe races. Fi ve or six men paddl e each canoe m ore fam il i ar with them. Each week on TV, the Monkees woul d pl ay and si ng songs wri tten by other musi ci ans. H owever, after a year or so i n whi ch they becam e m ore seri ous about thei r work, the Monkees started to pl ay and si ng thei r own songs l i ke a real band. Then they produced thei r own records and started touri ng and pl ayi ng thei r own m usi c. In the USA they becam e even m ore popul ar than the Beatl es and sol d even more records. The band broke up about 1970, but happi l y they reuni ted i n the mi d1980s. They produced a new record i n 1996, wi th whi ch they cel ebrated thei r form er tim e as a real band. Freddy the frog(Ⅱ) N ot l ong after Freddy and the band becam e famous, they vi sited Bri tai n on a bri ef tour. Fans showed thei r devoti on by waiti ng for hours to get ti ckets for thei r concerts . Freddy was now quite confi dent when he went i nto a concert hal l. H e enjoyed si ngi ng and al the congratul ati ons afterwards! H is m ost exci ting i nvi tati on was to perform on a TV programm e cal l ed “ Top of pops “. H e had to go to London, wear an expensi ve sui t and give a perform ance to a TV camera. It fel t very strange. But as soon as the program me was over, the tel ephones whi ch were i n the same rom started ri ngi ng. Everybody was aski ng when they coul d se Freddy and his band agai n. They were trul y stars. Then thi ngs went wrong. Freddy and hi s band coul d not go out anywhere wi thout bei ng fol owed. Even when they wore sungl asses or beards peopl e recogni zed them . Fans found them even when they went i nto toil et. They tri ed to hi de i n the readi ng rooms of l i brari es, but i t was usel ess. Som eone was al ways there! Thei r personal li fe was regularly di scussed by peopl e who di d not know them but tal ked as i f they cl ose fri ends. At l ast feel ing very upset and sensi ti ve, Freddy and his band real i zed that they m ust leave the country before i t becam e too pai nful for them.
