【正文】 he royalty, followed by the aristocracy, then by the gentry, and then by the lower classes, who made up the vast majority of the population. Although the gentry, or upper middle class, possessed servants and often large estates, they held a noheless fragile social position. The social status of aristocrats was a formal and settled matter, because aristocrats had official titles. Members of the gentry, however, held no titles, and their status was thus subject to change. A man might see himself as a gentleman but find, to his embarrassment, that his neighbors did not share this view. A discussion of whether or not a man was really a gentleman would consider such questions as how much land he owned, how many tenants and servants he had, how he spoke, whether he kept horses and a carriage, and whether his money came from land or “trade” — gentlemen scorned banking and mercial activities. Considerations of class status often crucially inform the characters’ motivations in Wuthering Heights. Catherine’s decision to marry Edgar so that she will be “the greatest woman of the neighborhood” is only the most obvious example. The Lintons are relatively firm in their gentry’ status but noheless take great pains to prove this status through their behaviors. The Earnshaws, on the other hand, rest on much shakier ground socially. They do not have a carriage, they have less land, and their house, as Lockwood remarks with great puzzlement, resembles that of a “homely, northern farmer” and not that of a gentleman. The shifting nature of social status is demonstrated most strikingly in Heathcliff’s trajectory from homeless waif to young gentleman by adoption to mon laborer to gentleman again. B. Heathcliff’s Own Character A man bears between love and hatred, and even hates as much as he loves. How a person as Heathcliff is formed and his character is twisted and distorted in the struggling of the fate? Being a human, he seems to represent the wild and natural forces often regarded to be immoral and dangerous to the society. His almost inhuman devotion to Catherine is the main force in his life. And Hindley’s Autocrat and brutality is the seeds of Hatred and evil in Heathcliff’s heart, which is enough to create a satanic devil. The unfair life maltreats him, which meanwhile creates his spirits of persistent, perseverance and depression. Heathcliff is a strong man, he needs Independent personality, needs people’s equal treatment, he is unwilling to twist his personality. However, in capitalist society, “material” controls man, at that time, Heathcliff has nothing, neither money nor position, what he owns is just Catherine’s support, sympathy, friendship and love. In the indifferent and lonely world, only Catherine is bright and warm in his lives of alone without anyone to depend, is his pillars of life. Without her friendship and love, to him, the whole world is hell. To his deepest sorrow, his world elapses, his hope disillusions, when he overhears the conversation that Catherine decides to marry Linton. Heathcliff believes that Catherine has already fotten and betrayed their love. Heathcliff feels that he is entirely separated and deserted in the cruel world. He has no way out but escapes from the family. Heathcliff’s destructive force is unlashed and he sets on the road of revenge. His vindictive hatred for all those who bullies him and who stands between him and his loved is another main moving force in his life. Three years later, Heathcliff returns with material wealth and awful revenge. He is no longer a man but an evil creature of revenge. The plan of revenge aims at two objectives: one is Hindley, the master of Wuthering Heights, who terribly maltreated him before。 another is Edgar, the master of Thrush cross Grange, who destroyed his love. Heathcliff’s hatred has grown ever since his miserable childhood. He receives the maltreatment from Hindley, because the latter considers the former as the invader of his privilege, the deep river of his father’s attention and love. To Heathcliff’s dismal, Hindley tries all his effort to separate him and Cathetine and even forbidden the conversations between them. Therefore, Heathcliff hates Hindley so deeply that the ideas of revenge came out as early as childhood. His hatred to Edgar has begun and grown with the intimate relationship between Catherine and Edgar. He revenges himself not merely on Hindley and Linton but also on their children. He makes all of them suffer even more than he has had. He marries Isabella but treats her cruelly. He forces little Cathy to marry his dying son with the purpose to seize the right of inheritance to the property of Linton’s family. However, all his evil behaviors reflect other sides of Heathcliff’s personality: endless love for Catherine and the fearless rebellion to the fate. Were it not for the deep affection for Catherine, he might have married another girl, noble and beauty when he gains the material wealth。 he might have shouldered the responsibility of a husband and led a happy life with Isabella, a pretty and noble woman, after their marriage. But he never gives in the struggle against the unfair fate, like a Byronic Hero, who bears the guilty of being a destroyer of the morality rule, insists on to the last minute in front of his enemies. What is more, he is a man full of courage and inspiration. He looks down upon the conventional norms and longs for a purer and freer inner world. V. Conclusion “Inevitably, the unbridgeable gab in Catherine’s and Heathcliff’s social positions renders their fervent romance unrealizable on any practical level”. 16 Catherine’s actions are so stringing driven by her social ambitions, which she betrays her lover, and consequently Heathcliff’s love turns top the hate. Heathcliff bees a socalled genteel man, returns
