In a word, since practice makes perfect, interpreting needs practice, practice and practice. 12 Chapter Ⅱ A Preliminary Introduction of Chinese Classical Poetry in Press Conference Definition of Chinese classical poetry Poetry is language with musical rhymes. It is believed that poetry derives from the Greek word “poiesis”. Chinese classical poetry is poetry written or spoken in the Chinese language. Poetry has always played a significant role in China, often representing wonderful thinking cultivated by the Chinese poets, especially in ancient times. The various versions of Chinese poetry include two primary types, namely, classical Chinese poetry and modern Chinese poetry. Chinese classical poetry is poetry written or spoken in the Chinese language in ancient times. The differences in culture and history between the east and the west make westerners appreciate the rich Chinese poetic traditions, thus making Chinese classical poetry a meaningful and interesting object of study. In Chinese culture, Chinese classical poetry has offered a platform for both public and private groups to appreciate Chinese literature, giving a stunning attraction to readers, experts and scholars. As a result, the essence of Chinese classical poetry which has spread for more than two thousand years in Chinese history can be better demonstrated and applauded. The history of Chinese classical poetry is both extensive and profound. It starts far back and runs a long course. At the same time, marvelous achievements have been made by it. The Chinese classical poetry has been defined in the following ways: “Poetry is pure literature with temperament” (朱光潛 , 1984). 13 “Poetry is essentially thought colored with emotion” (林語堂 , 1998). Basic Features of Chinese classical poetry First, oftentimes, Chinese classical poetry is literally concise and simple. As a result, the author should use the accurate words and delete some useless ones. For example, in Tune: Tian Jing Sha [1], “枯藤 老樹昏鴉 / 小橋流水人家 / 古道西風(fēng)瘦馬 / 夕陽西下 / 斷腸人在天涯 ”, the author depicts a sense of nostalgia within only twenty eight words. If the readers ever try to add some other words into the poem, the amazing artistry will be totally ruined. Second, for the sake of beauty in form, Chinese classical poetry usually prises a group of four syllables and ends with rhymes. Meanwhile, analogy, personification, exaggeration are usually utilized in Chinese classical poetry. Shi, ci and qu are primary types in Chinese classical poetry. Traditional forms of Chinese poetry are rhymed, and thus any lack of rhyme would disqualify a work from being considered as poetry. Third, despite these characteristics mentioned above, interpreters can interpret the lines successfully due to other features of Chinese classical poetry and the utilization of some practical interpreting strategies. Because all these lines e from the inner feelings of the author, interpreters can interpret the lines according to the artistry behind the original words. Reason and function of quoting Chinese classical poetry in press conference In today’s press conference, the speakers tend to quote Chinese classical poetry very often. The Chinese classical poetry is of great significance in traditional Chinese civilization. 14 As China gets increasingly engaged onto the international arena, the essence of Chinese civilization— Chinese classical poetry— should be popularized. By quoting Chinese classical poetry in press conference, the world can have a more prehensive and clear understanding about China’s yesterday and today. With China’s development gaining full steam, people’s living standards and individual education background have been notably strengthened. The speakers, especially China’s leaders who speak in press conference, have the inspiration and ability to quote Chinese classical poetry. In this way, on one hand, the speaker’s purpose is able to be expressed vividly。 on the other hand, the speaker gains the respect and admiration from the listeners. Take Premier Wen Jiabao’s press conference as an example. In his press conference in 20xx, he quoted “入則懇懇以盡忠 , 出則謙謙以自悔 ” to express his determination to serve the Chinese people and government. The two lines he quoted means that Officials should serve as loyal as they can conscientiously when they are in office and engage in modest selfreflection when their terms end. By quoting these lines, the Chinese public would not only respect and admire Premier Wen Jiabao’s literature establishments, but also more importantly appreciate and gratify his contributions and dedications to our country. It is a winwin oute. The next reason is a cultural one. There is a habit in Chinese language, namely, speakers prefer to quote several traditional lines at the beginning or in the middle of his or her speech for the purpose of creating an atmosphere of artistry. Just like the saying “A good beginning is half done!” quoting several line of Chinese classical poetry is essentially important. 15 Chapter Ⅲ Reproduction of Chinese Classical Poetry in Press Conference Differences of poetry translating and poetry interpreting Translating is to reexpress the meaning of the original lines. It is essential because disparities between languages spur people to utilize translating to overe language gap so as to municate with each other in a better way. Interpreting literally means “explanation”. The governing principle of interpreting is “explanation” or somet
