Do you have any questions? ZY: Can I go out on a story imm edi ately? H X: (l aughi ng)That?s admi rabl e, but I?m afrai d i t would be unusual ! Wai t ti l you?re more experi enced. First we?l l put you as an asi stant to an experi enced journali st. Later you can cover a story and subm it the arti cle yoursel f. ZY: Wonderful. What do I need to take wi th me? I already have a notebook and cam era. H X: No need for a camera. You?l l have a profesi onal photographer with you to take photographs. H ave you ever had a case where someone accused your journal ists of geti ng the wrong end of the stick? H X: Yes, but i t was a l ong time ago. This i s how the story goes. A footbal l er was acused of taking money for deli beratel y not scoring goals so as to l et the other team wi n. We went to intervi ew him. H e deni ed taki ng m oney but we were skepti cal. So we arranged an i nterview between the footbal ler and the man supposed to bri be him. When we saw them together we guesed from the fotbal er?s body l anguage that he was not teli ng the truth. So we wrote an arti cl e suggesti ng he was gui lty. It was a di lemm a because the footbal er could have demanded dam ages if we were wrong. He tri ed to stop us publ ishi ng it but later we were proved right. ZY: Wow! That was a real “scoop”. I?m l ooki ng forward to m y fi rst asignm ent now. Perhaps I?l l get a scop to! H X: Perhaps you wil l. You never know. GETTING TH E “SCOOP” “quick, ” sai d the editor. “Get that story ready. We need it i n thi s edi ti on to be ahead of the other newspapers. Thi s i s a scoop.” Zou Yang had just e back i nto the ofi ce after an intervi ew with a fam ous film star. “Di d he real ly do that?” asked som eone from the Internati onal N ews Departm ent. “Yes, I?m afrai d he di d,” Zhou Yang answered. H e set to work. H is fi rst task was to write his story, but he had to do it careful y. Al though he real ized the man had ben l yi ng, Zhou Yang knew he must not acuse hi m directly. He woul d have to be accurate, Concise to! He knew how to do that. Months of training had taught him to write wi th no wasted words or phrases. He sat down at his puter and began to work. The first person who saw hi s article was a senior editor from his department, . He checked the evidence, read the article and passed i t on to the copyeditor.
