The biomass C and N were determined by the chloroform fumigation and extraction method. The dissolved organic carbon content in the supernatant was measured on a Shimadzu TOC500 automated Total Organic Carbon Analyzer. The Kjeldahl Nitrogen Determination method was applied to measure the dissolved organic nitrogen content in the supernatant. The direct absorption method was used to measure the soil basal respiration. Result showed that microbial biomass C, microbial biomass N and soil basal respiration rate decreased significantly in soil treated with three herbicides at a level of 10 mgkg1 especially within the initial 20 days incubation, then this effect decreased after 20 days. The sequence of the affection of three herbicides on biological indicators for soil quality was: metsulfuronmethyl>atrazine, butachlor. Maybe the degradation velocity of herbicides were one main reason conduced these phenomenon.Key words: herbicides。 microbial biomass carbon。 microbial biomass nitrogen。 soil basal respiration
