ve. But she would give him some money sometimes. It is not because Pauline did not love her husband any more, but her husband could not satisfy her standard of an ideal husband. Her marriage was just a tragedy, she did not love her husband and her husband even could not deserve her. So she was in love with another man who was real father of Robert. In her automatic speaking, she opened her heart and showed her strong love to that man. And when he was dead, she transferred her love to Robert, the son of her and him. Compared with this, if Pauline had a happy marriage, she would not love her own son Henry, and she would not love another man and give birth to Robert and finally love Robert after Henry’s death. So in other words, unhappy marriage was one of the reasons for Pauline’s Jocasta plex. C. The Influence of Jocasta Complex1. Tragedy of Heroine Capered the life of Pauline before her secrete was brought to light and after that, the lovely lady almost changed from a beauty and charm into an old and ugly witch. There is a description, “her aunt, in a dress of black lace over ivory colour, stood in the doorway. Her face was made up, but haggard with a look of unspeakable irritability, as if years of suppressed exasperation and dislike of her fellowmen had suddenly crumpled her into an old witch.”12 For many years, Pauline had been struggling and suffering with Jocasta plex in her whole life. She played the role of a lovely and charming lady but not with her real heart. She hated life like this, but she had no courage to go out from it and finally relief herself. After her secrete was known by her niece Ciss, and after Ciss pretended to be Henry to scare her, she totally could not stand it. She became haggard and old just between one night and a day. She looked old, very old, just like a witch. Even her loved son Robert just fetched furtive glances at her. Not to say Ciss. Because of her Jocasta plex, she changed from a lovely lady to an old, ugly and crazy lady. But the influence is not only this. Finally, Pauline won her relieves at a great cost of her own life. It is not difficult to see this is a tragedy. Pauline was found dead in her bed, having taken too much veronal. But did her death really free herself from Jocasta plex? Absolutely the answer is no.2. Influence on Other Characters There is no question that Henry’s death was because of Pauline’s Jocasta plex. He was the first victim. Because of his mother’s prevention, he finally consumed away with grief, which caused his mother to make Robert bee the second victim. So to Robert, when he was a child after his brother’s death, he became the surrenal of Henry. Even in other people’s eyes like Ciss, he was thought that “what would e be when his mother was dead?—in a dozen more years. He would be just a shell, the shell of a man who had never lived.”13 He depended so much on his mother. He did not only depend on emotion to his mother, but on money, because his mother’s Jocasta plex seriously influenced his psychology and development. On the one hand, he was fascinated by his mother, which led that he could not have normal emotion to other girls. He was controlled by his mother deeply. On the other hand, he was so shamed of this emotion, and he thought that he was not a man in the presence of his mother. But he even could not run away from that strange circle. Finally, after Pauline was dead, she didn’t forget to give a hit back at her son and her niece. She left nothing to them but just a little money. The third victim was Ciss, at the beginning。 Ciss is looked so down by Pauline. She knew Ciss loved Robert, but she still kept the close relationship with him, which really hurt Ciss deeply. But finally, when Ciss knew how ugly her Aunt was. She not only ruined the love between her and Robert, but also should be responsible for Henry’s death. Ciss was so shame for her, but she needed to depend on her. So finally, Pauline just left her one hundred pounds, which was a bigger hit to her. Ⅳ. Conclusion We must admit that the novel is a tragedy which was ended with the death of Pauline. But there are some aspects giving us some forts, that Robert finally got away from his mother’s control and Ciss finally married Robert. The son ran away from mother’s Jocasta plex, the niece got her own happiness. Although Pauline was dead, it could be the best way for her to relieve herself and to get a peace. For one thing, this paper analyzed the heroine’s Jocasta plex and what lead this abnormal emotion and what influence it brings. Through so many descriptions in the novel, we can see that Jocasta plex made the lovely lady finally bee a crazy and ugly old woman. Even in her niece’s eyes, she could be an evil. Under her control, her elder son Henry died and her second son Robert also experienced a bad memory even though he got himself relieve from her mother’s control and finally got normal and free. For another thing, this article analyzed the reasons for heroine’s Jocasta plex from the concrete reflection of heroine and other protagonists. All in all, heroine’s Jocasta Complex not only brings bad influence and the liferisk to heroine herself, but also takes away other’s life and happiness. 14Notes1 2 ,黑馬譯,《牧師的女兒們——?jiǎng)趥愃怪卸唐≌f(shuō)精粹》,北京:中國(guó)致公出版社,2012年,第198頁(yè)。3 .
