【正文】 f women went beyond man, which means that more and more working women were getting rid of mandominated society. Women (Richard. Hofstadter: The Progressive Movement 19001915, New York 1963,P8487) Other factorsThe World War I acts as the catalysis for feminist movement of 20th century in American. The same as American previous wars, women played two parts: housewives at home and contributor during WWI. They established the National League for Women’s Service for car service and nursing care. Those women came from different states of American and did their utmost for their country. All of these things not only show their patriotism but also proved that women are petent for the challenge of new society. And they are also capable for the job that man can do, at least as well as man. From then, women’s status changed. On 28th august, 1918, The New York Times mented female working on farm, “She is not a joke, promoting the bat this time.” In April, President Wilson praised her as national guide. (Clio Was a Woman: Studies in the History of American Women edited by Mabel. E. Deutrich and Virginia. C. Purdy Howard University Press Washington . 1980,P142)From all the above, there are various factors effecting the development of feminism. Among those, economic strike brought by modernization stands the highest. Meanwhile, women are all positive to such modernization, engaging themselves in revolution whilst fighting for their own rights, which change the traditional concept on women. Thus, American feminism moves towards prosperity.Chapter Four Feminism seen from the writer Worry For Mrs. Compson, Faulkner shows his sympathy for she is the product and victim of southern patriarchy and southern lady hood. Mrs. Compson desperately struggles to live up to the image of a lady。 however, all her struggle and efforts proved to be futile. The house is sold off and the family economy declines. Moreover, her eldest son Quentin mits suicide and her only daughter degenerates. Even her only granddaughter bees a bitch. After family collapse, Mrs. Compson has fallen from the pedestal. Meanwhile, Faulkner’s antipathy towards her is not covered up for she has changed from the victim into an oppressor. She is both a bannerholder and accessory of traditional codes and southern lady hood. She is blamed for her cold and selfish unmaternal behavior. Her inpetence directly causes the tragic life of her children and she is regarded as the source of the family tragedy. From Mrs. Compson, author’s satire of southern lady hood which poisons its women is vividly demonstrated. Caddy, the only female of the second generation of the Compson family, degenerates from an innocent girl to an immoral whore. By way of three brother’s narration, Faulkner makes clear that it is the prejudice and discrimination of southern society against women as well as the coolness and indifference in Compson family that cause the tragic life of Caddy. For Caddy, Faulkner also expresses his lament for her corruption and the disastrous effect she brings to her family. So it could be concluded that besides love, author also hold a prejudiced attitude towards Caddy. The portrait of the two female characters by Faulkner shows his worry about American feminism. He is afraid that women will continue to be poisoned by the southern doctrine and the following generations will be distorted by their mothers. HopeAs Caddy, Little Quentin is also treated by Jason badly and destroyed by loveless and indifferent family. However, we cannot deny that there exists a strong feminism on little Quentin, fighting against oppression and abuse from the patriarchy society and engaging herself to find a way in South American. In the end of this novel, Faulkner shows us an open ending, which provide us a large space for imagine. As far as I am concerned, the novel does not tell us the oute of little Quentin shows Faulkner’s whish that a promising feminism will be demonstrated in American. Chapter Five ConclusionFrom the above discussion, this thesis has explored Faulkner`s attitudes towards women through the three main female characters and their response to the oppression from the maledominated society in The Sound and the Fury.Such phenomenon is mainly caused by religion concept and economic development. At the same time the world war is also the influential factor for feminism.Obviously, Faulkner criticizes the cruelty of the patriarchal ideology and its destructive influence on women in the old South. He is a humanist writer and shows great pity on the southern women because of their tragic life and no freedom in every aspect of life in that maledominated society. Meanwhile, Mrs. Compson, Caddy and Miss Quentin the three important women in the novel prove Faulkner`s confidence and admiration in the southern women. They are all the victims of the maledominated society in which they have no right to speak for themselves and be oppressed by men. However, Caddy and little Quentin do not give up fighting in silence as most of the southern ladies do. In order to free herself from being defined, she fights with patriarchal society in an extremely heroic way. Miss Quentin is brave and courageous enough to challenge Jason`s power and cruelty in the family. She deepens her mother`s fighting against Jason by stealing his money the only important thing to him in the world at the end of the story. By escaping from the Compson family she successfully avoids the oppression of men in the old south. Though Caddy and Miss Quentin, it is known that southern women are full of female consciousness. They are brave and defiant enough to fight against oppression from the men and the society and reconstruct their female position.Rather than considering woman as resource of all the “evil and trouble”, Faulkner apparently consider them as a dynamic force in the maledominated society of the south. In addition, little Quentin speaks out her own voice through her devotion and
