But oral test is only to prepare for aboveaverage students, which cannot test the all round ability of the college students. From the parison of these two data, college students concern more about grammar than the other language items. Suggestions on CETAccording to the analysis about the teaching material, testpaper, and views of teachers and students and preparations of the college students, the following suggestions on CET are stated: 1). CET is a teaching test but not a selecting test.Its purpose is to check the fulfillment of the College English Syllabus.Therefore it should be designed as a teachingcriterionreference test but not a studentlevelreference test.As long as students e up to the required standards,they should be allowed to pass the examination.The passing rate should not be determined according to their relative position in a studentlevelreference group.2). As a test of teaching evaluation,CET is named according to semesters. But it should be held once a year according to the arrangement. The present biannual test has caused both teachers and students to prepare one test after another without a breathing spell.As a result, the routine teaching is interrupted and quality education for enhancing students municative ability in English cannot be carried out.Preparation for CET4 takes so much time on students’ normal study, which make them ignore the studies of other subjects,particularly their majors. So, CET should be held annually so as to leave a stable period for both teachers and students to keep their mind on their normal work instead of getting busy with CET all the time.3). The main reason for the overflow of multiplechoice questions in new CET is that it is convenient to grade papers by machines.If this convenience is kept at the sacrifice of the test validity,it may misleads the college students in their English study. It breaches the original intention of the test.Therefore,objective items should be reduced again after the reform in 2005, while subjective ones be increased in the new CET in order to objectively evaluate students’ listening and speaking ability.The increase of subjective questions means more workload for paper grading but this problem can be solved by reducing the frequency of the test.Only by improving the structure validity of CET can college English teaching be redirected to the right course of enhancing students municative ability and can the negative backwash effect of CET be adjusted.4). CET should make oral test mon. Until now, in the new CET, only those who have got a high score can take part in the oral test. However, the others have no chance to take this test. That is not fair to all the college students. For example, speaking test is also a kind of petence test on testees’ English study. Only paper test cannot test the allround abilities of college students. In fact, some college students are good at speaking English, but not good at paper test. Therefore, making sure to keep fair for giving every testee a chance is necessary. That is to say, oral English test’ score of every college student should be added in CET.5. ConclusionOriginally CET is a means of accessing and promoting college English teaching but now it inclines to bee socialized and mercialized with the increasing numbers of social testees.This large numbers of social testees bring great pressures on colleges and universities to arrange CET twice every year.Thus the original nature of the test is being changed and some new problems also arise.Since many social testees are not really qualified for CET and their real purpose is to obtain CET certificates,the cheating rate in CET is rising.Therefore,the nature and orientation of CET must be reconsidered.If it is a test for assessing the college English teaching quality, it should be orientated as a teachingcriterionreferenced test.However,if its function is to evaluate the English level of people in the college,it should be set as a studentlevelreference test.Only when these fundamental problem is solved can we clearly set the function of CET so as to promote instead of affecting college English teaching.In this way the purpose of the present college English teaching reform, which is aims at promoting students ability in munication can be fulfilled.
