Besides, the college students’ preparation troubles and their situations about the CET are concluded. At last, this thesis advocates some proposals and suggestions on CET.2. Matters on the teaching materials situation of teaching materialsThis paper focuses on analyzing the teaching materials. After the Ministry of Education announced 《The Course Requirements of College English Education》, the reform of CET started.《The Course Requirements of College English Education》 shows its aim on nurturing students allround abilities. Its key point is improving students’ ability in listening and speaking with reading and writing. Meanwhile, “Multimedia Teaching Pattern” was posed out.After the late 1990s, teaching materials became varieties, such as 《New College English》,《21 Century College English》etc.. In the 21 century, a large number of teaching materials came out, like 《New Horizon College English》,《Experiencing English》, 《Seed of Compassion》and so on. These changes break the situation of using only one kind of textbook. Besides, modern technology is adopted and used in classroom teaching. As a result, college students not only can study with their paper teaching materials, but also can be assisted by modern multimedia technology. Characteristics of the teaching materials The past teaching materials contained the following mon characters. Firstly, the traditional teaching style took care of reading ability more than other abilities. Secondly, the teaching materials became more particular and systemized. Thirdly, generally, all the teaching materials were written by professors from the key universities. However, these teaching materials may only fit the key university students, which mean they may not fit all the college students. Compared with these traditional teaching materials, the fourthedited teaching materials have changed and improved a lot. The edited ideas cover different kinds of teaching technology. Thus, the evaluation of a kind of teaching materials needs to bine teaching syllabus with the aim of foreign language teaching curricula. Cunningworth (1995) announced four principles for evaluating teaching materials. Firstly, teaching materials must fit for the need of students and the aim of the college language teaching course. Secondly, teaching materials should reflect the current trend in English teaching and help students use the target language effectively. Thirdly, teaching materials should fit for the need of students and boost the whole study course. Fourthly, teaching materials should bee a bridge between target language and students.According to the above four principles, it is believed that teaching aim and teaching materials are a kind of relation between goals and means. Teaching aim confirms its goal and teaching materials are used to achieve the realistic goal. The teaching aim of 2004 showed that the aim of university English teaching was to nurture college students’ allround abilities, especially in listening and speaking, so that they could speak fluently in their future jobs and munication. At the same time, it also aimed at improving students’ autonomous learning ability and their qualities and breeding, so that they could keep pace with the social development and the international munication.(陳堅(jiān)林,2007)According to the teaching aims of the Syllabus 2004, the course should concentrate on nurturing students’ allround abilities. But a lot of college students think vocabulary is a block in nurturing their allround abilities. So, analysis on the vocabulary of teaching materials is quite necessary. Firstly, the teaching aim totally covers 4000 words, 40 percent of which are basic words of middle school, Such as father, mother, brother, cat, dog and so on. Even worse, the meanings of these words are the same as those learned in middle school without new meanings, like the above words. This situation is totally not only a waste of college students’ time, but also narrows the number of their words. According to the requirements of the college English test, vocabulary request in our country is 4000 to 5000, but the other countries, like Japan and Russia, are respectively 5900 to 15000 and 9000 to 15500 (). To some degree, enough vocabulary is the basic for college students to improve their English level to some degree. All these vocabularies are mainly learned from the textbooks. If these textbooks also cover a large number of middle school words, college students’ expression will be limited. Thus, widening the vocabulary in the textbooks is quite useful for college students to have a good mand of English. The second disadvantage of the vocabulary is that some high frequency words haven’t been selected as required vocabulary. For example, some high frequency words, like telephone, telegram…, are collected in the vocabulary, but some modern telemunication expressions, like telex, fax, Email and so on are not collected. Other example is that the ancient expression “King” is collected in the textbook as a new word, but the modern expression “premier” is not.
