Americans are afraid of interrupt others, and remember infringement act all the time. Since they think coughs, hiccups, sneezes and farts would transmit bacteria, and pollute the environment, it is necessary to say ‘I’m sorry’. (ibid: 102) Taboo and ModestyAmericans don’t like to talk about age, especially the female。 age is regarded as a taboo. But Chinese never mind. Americans extremely mind being asked about marital status, as a result of popularly using of ‘Ms’, but Chinese don’t. Chinese often ask other’s marital status in other’s presence. For American, ine and oute is the top secret thing in their life. Colleagues never talk about their salary with each other. Since they were treated in differential wage. Even for a couple, they only know the ine, not the expenditure. What’s more, Americans don’t want to be asked detailed address, as they are not inured to call on relatives and friends without permission. If they are willing to invite you, they will tell you or drive you there. While Chinese would offensively ask detailed address. (ibid: 121) Compliment and ModestyCompared with Chinese, Americans like listening and speaking more words of pliment which would make people happy. In intercultural munication, the misunderstanding mainly caused by identification on pliment, on what kind of occasion, what and who to be respected. For example, when you call on an American or English friend, he would ask you to look around his house. After that, please remember to show your appreciation on it. If not, the friend will be unpleasant. Chinese think that Americans show others the excessive number of insincere or embarrassing pliment. In fact, pliment is heartfelt words about people or things, but maybe it is just greeting. Americans usually show their respect on their families with apparent expressions such as spouse, parents, children and so on. But Chinese usually put their respect on their families into their heart and never say it out. Facing praise, Chinese usually belittles them to show their modesty, which makes Americans feel puzzled and fall into embarrassing. Chinese always think highly of others, but belittle himself at the same time. On the contrary, Americans are confident while show respect to others. When they look for a job, they would try their best to introduce their petence. Even promise some important thing. Chinese are modesty, the application for a job or entering an university always gives others a deep impression of unconfidence. You’re modesty, but Americans may think you do not have the ability of doing a job. (ibid: 104,112)Today, in the case of international economic globalization, exchanges and cooperation between nations bee more and more frequent, while the English has bee an international language and the necessary language of the national exchanges and cooperation. Therefore, it is essential for us to learn English. Englishlearning has bee more and more porpular in our society. So to improve Englishmunicative ability is of importance, whatever teachers or students should try their best to improve Englishmunicative petence. In the paper, the author just put forward some suggestions for English learners.
