Learning to read effectively and extensively is the first and foremost requirement for anyone who wants to learn to write. Without being actively involved in reading, one will never learn to write. Besides, learning something about the writing skills contributes to the development of reading proficiency, while imitating model essays after reading is an effective way to successful writing, which makes reading more meaningful and purposeful.Firstly, reading helps enrich students’ knowledge. Through reading books on Western culture and customs, students can get familiar with the life style of native speakers。 shorten the cultural gap between native speakers and them. Also, reading helps students accumulate useful and beautiful sentences as well as idioms. It helps cultivate the students’ literary appreciation. If the students collect the essence, the good points and sentences while reading and browse them very often, they will enlarge their scope of vocabulary, which is the basis of writing. This helps them write more idiomatically.Secondly, reading can expand students’ line of thought. As the Chinese saying goes “The more you read, the better you write.” Reading provides sources for our writing, because we may find out many fresh things through reading like the changing in the nature. This will make the students take notice of what is happening around them. And they will find many things deserve writing.Thirdly, reading can arouse students’ desire for and interest in writing. Especially after they read good essays, they will be willing to write something similar. Sometimes they do not take notice of the things happening around them, but others do, and write something good about the things. Then they think they can also do it. If they are not satisfied with what they have written, they will revise it again and again until they think it as good as what they have read.Lastly, reading can provide models for students’ writing. At the very beginning, the students imitate to write. The essays they read provide sentence patterns and phrases for them. Gradually, they can use different sentence patterns to write about the same thing. Also, they can write about the same thing in their own ways. After doing this again and again, their writing skills definitely will be improved to some extent.However, if the students do not practice writing, no matter how many books they read, they will not improve their writing, because “practice makes perfect”. If they do not practice often, the result will undoubtedly be dissatisfaction. Like learning to swim, learners should not only learn the theory, but also jump into the water. The latter is even more crucial in the learning process, for without jumping into the water and struggling in it, one can never learn how to swim. It is the same for writing. After reading, the students may have some ideas of their own。 practicing at the same time may provide them with opportunities to express themselves freely by using the language and the writing techniques they have just learnt. They can practice writing in a couple of ways under the guide of the teacher. Two most frequently used methods are free writing and guided writing.Students should unite the two kinds of writing properly. While practicing guided writing, they should follow the teacher’s guide strictly. But if they only practice guided writing, their thoughts will always be limited. However, free writing can remedy this disadvantage. And students should also practice in proper ways. They should ask the teacher or their classmates and friends to read their positions and point out their mistakes. Only when they do these, can they improve their writing skills.The application of process approach is effective to improve students’ writing. The essence of the application of process approach to help students recognize the whole writing process through their internal thinking, and find out the core of problems so as to take the most proper strategy to solve problems. The final aim of the application of process approach is to improve students’ English level.As a tentative study, the application of process approach not only improves students’ English writing level, but also teaches them how to analyze and solve any problems independently in their following learning, and know how to evaluate their own performance and progress objectively. Therefore, process approach is meaningful to English writing teaching.To sum up, in order to improve rural students’ writing ability, respectively, government and society should try to create a better condition for rural English teachers. The teacher and students should undertake their responsibility. The teacher should try to arouse the students’ desire to write and attract their interest in writing, especially change their writing teaching approach. And the teacher should also give proper guidance to students. Meanwhile, students should try their best to cultivate their writing petence. They should spend their spare time in reading books. They should also practice writing as much as possible because practice makes perfect.
