【正文】 out in last chapter. In the Englishment, he translates “怡紅公子” and “怡紅院“ as green boy and green delights. He avoids misunderstanding owe to different colour. The Same Colour with Same Meaning As the same human live in the same colorful word, Chinese and English has same feeling to same colour. Thus, there are many same colour terms has same meaning. For instance, “blue print”(藍(lán)圖) , “blue collar”(藍(lán)領(lǐng)) , “white collar”(白領(lǐng)) , “black market”(黑市) and so on. 10 No Corresponding Meaning in Each Other’s Culture Sometimes, we can not find the corresponding colour words in each other?s language. For example, blue stocking才 女 , green finger好園藝師 , a red letter day 重要的日子 and so on. And 白開水 boiled water,白天 day time,黃道吉日 lucky day,黃瓜 cucumber. 5 Translation Strategies of Colour Terms The Goal of Translation In translation, linguistic mistakes has a close relationship to the language transfer. Language transfer (also known as L1 interference, linguistic interference, and cross meaning) refers to speakers or writers applying knowledge from their native language to a second language. It is most monly discussed in the context of English teaching and learning, but it can occur in any situation when someone does not have a nativelevel mand of a language, as when translating into a second language (Selinker, 1972). So, what is the goal of translation? It is make the readers understand the full meaning of source text. According to different culture between two different culture, the goal is hardly to achieve. The great translator Yan Fu(嚴(yán)復(fù)) said “譯事三難:信、達(dá)、雅,求其信已大難矣,顧信矣不達(dá),碎譯猶不譯也,則達(dá)尚焉?!?He gives three word to describe the criterion of translation。信 faithfulness,達(dá) expressiveness,雅 elegance. Since then, the three words became the criterion of Chinese translation circle. In modern time, translator Zhang peiji(張培基) gives two phrases to redefine the criterion:忠實(shí) faithful,通順 clear and coherent. The two criteria both ask us to make the target text close to source target as possible as you can, meanwhile, the target text must be coherent. Literal Translation WordforWord Translation Through Chinese and English e from two different color, as the same kind of creature who live in same colorful earth, the languages we used has something alike. In some situation, we can translate color word word by word directly. 11 For instance: (1)薇的花色還是鮮艷的,一朵紫紅,一朵統(tǒng)一嫩紅,一朵是病黃的象牙色中帶有幾分血暈。 The were still fresh in color. One was purplishred, another pink, still another a sickly ivoryyellow slightly tinged with bloodred. The sentence is describes the color of flower. These color terms can be found in each language. And 象牙色 is a material color term, can translate to “ivoryyellow”, which has no lost meaning. (2)┅┅ 紅的火紅,白的雪白,青的靛青,綠的碧綠,更有那一株半株的丹楓夾在里面 ┅┅ The red were as red as fire, the white as white as snow, the blue as blue as indigo and the green as green as emerald, while here and there were a few red maples. The sentence is also describes the color of plant. (3)Through a crack in the wall, the sky was a fishbelly gray. 魚肚白從土壁的破洞里鉆進(jìn)來了。 “ 魚肚白” is a material colour term. (4)He is a tall, burly fellow with long hair and more white than black to his eyes. 他是一個(gè)高大身材,長(zhǎng)頭發(fā),眼 球白多黑少的人。 Literal Translation Adding Explanatory Note In some situation, literal translation can not express the full meaning of source text. Or, there is no corresponding meaning in reader?s culture. At the moment, we can add a explanatory note to explain what the truth meaning of colour term is. For example: (1) Black Tuesday 黑色星期二 (It refers to 19th October in 1987 (Tuesday in America) when Wall Street stock market broken down). If we do not add the explanatory note, the reader in Chinese can not understand the exact meaning of the word. 12 (2)他們分別的前一天,他送她一顆 紅豆 。 On the day before they separate, he gave her a red bean, which is the token of their love and memory. In Chinese culture, red bean is the token of love, which has no corresponding meaning in western culture. Free Translation Omission of Colour Words Sometimes, the source text use a extended sense, and we can not find a right color term in target language to express the extended sense. Under these circumstances, to achieve the criterion of faithful, clear and coherent, we do not need to translate the color terms. For instance: (1) In American political elections the candidates that win are usually the ones who have green power backing them. 在美國(guó)選舉中獲勝的候選人往往都是有著財(cái)團(tuán)的支持的人物。 In America, money is green. So green is always connected with money. Green power means the power of money. We do not have the connotation in Chinese. (2) Blue Stocking 才女 The connotation es from English society. In 17th century, the lady who is talent wears blue stocking. Addition of Colour Words The color words are usually used to express the extend sense. Sometimes, add a color word can make target text more fluent and easier to understand. For instance: 13 (1) He did not do in vain. 他沒有白干。 (2) Her eyes bee moist. 她的眼圈紅了 。 Transformation of Colour Words At most times, owing to different cultural background, it is hardly to find the exact right color word in target text. Under the situation, we usually chang another word to make target text close to source text without losing the rhythm. For instance: Blue film 黃色電影 , black sugar 紅糖 , black tea 紅茶 (1) 他的身上青一塊紫一塊。 His body is black and blue. ( 2) Father was black with anger. 爸爸氣得臉色發(fā)紫。 ( 3) 看著有些人富起來,他就臉紅。 He is green with envy when he sees someone get rich. These sentences use the skill of changing another color word to make the readers understand the full meaning of source text easily. 6 Conclusion Language is the carrier of the culture.
