【正文】 At school, they had l earned that m ost Canadi ans li ve wi thi n a few hundred ki l om etres of the USA border, and Canada?s popul ati on i s only sl i ghtl y over thi rty m il li on, but now they were am azed to see such an em pty country. They went through a wheatgrowi ng provi nce and saw farms that covered thousands of acres. Afrer dinner, they were back i n an urban area, the busy port ci ty of Thunder Bay at the top of the Great Lakes. Because of the Great Lakes, they l earned, Canada has m ore fresh water than any other country in the worl d. In fact, i t has onethi rd of the worl d?s total fresh water, and m uch of it i s i n the Great Lakes. That ni ght as they sl ept, the train rushed across the top of Lake Superi or, through the great forests and southward towads Toronto. “The True North” from Toronto to Montreal The next m orni ng the bushes and m apl e trees outsi de thei r wi ndow were red, gol d and orange, and there was frost on the ground, confi rm i ng that fal had arri ved i n Canada. Around noon they arrived i n Toronto, the bi ggest and most weal thy ci ty i n Canada. They were not l eavi ng for Montreal unti l l ater, so they went on a tour of the city. They went up the tal l CN Tower and l ooked across the l ake. In the di stance, they coul d see the Mi sty cloud that rose from the great Ni agara Fal s, whi ch i s on the south si de of the l ake. The water fl ows i nto the Ni agara Ri ver and over the fal s on i ts way to the sea. They saw the covered stadi um, hom e of several fam ous basketbal l team s. As they wal ked north from the harbour area, Li Dai yu sai d, “Li n Fang, one of m y m other?s ol d scholm ates, li ves here. I shoul d phone her from a tel ephone both.” They m et Li n Fei around dusk in downtown Chi natown, one of the three in Toronto. O ver di nner at a restaurant cal l ed The Pi nk Pearl , the cousi ns chated wi th Li n Fei, who had m oved to Canada m any years earl ier. “We can get good Cantonese food here,” Li n Fei tol d them, “ because most of the Chi nese peopl e here e from South Chi na, especi al y H ong Kong. It?s too bad you can?t go as far as Ottawa, Canada?s capi tal . It?s approxim atel y four hundred kil om eters northeast of Toronto, so i t woul d take too l ong.” The trai n l eft late that ni ght and arri ved i n Montreal at dawn the next m orni ng. At the stati on, peopl e everywhere were speaki ng French. There were si ghs and ads i n French, but som e of them had Engli sh words i n sm al er l eters. “We don39。s too bad, ” he sai d. “Montreal i s a ci ty wi th wonderful restaurants and clubs. Most of us speak both Engl ish and French, but the ci ty has French cul ture and tradi ti ons. Iqal ui t – the frozen town The reporter, Beth Al l en, arri ved i n a northern muni ty cal led Iqal ui t i n N unavut. N unavut was created i n 1999 as a speci al area for Inui t peopl e. Its nam e m eans “O ur Land” i n their l anguage. It i s i n the farthest northeastern area of Canada, north or the Arcti c Ci rcl e, and is very col d – the average wi ter tem perature i n N unavut i s 35 degrees bel ow zero. Beth sai d, “ I knew i t woul d be coul d i n January, but not thi s col d! Maybe there i s a dog sled that can take m e i nto town. ” The qui et m an who had been on the pl ane wi th her sai d, “I?l l take you i nto town, but I don?t hace a dog sl ed. Most peopl e onl y use the dogs for peti ti ons, why are you vi si ti ng Iqal ui t?” Beth answered, “ I?m wri ti ng a story for my newspaper about Iqal uit – we?d l i ke to adverti se it as a holi day place, but I thi nk it?s too col d.” The man l aughed. “My nam e i s Sim on and I am Inuit, ” he sai d. “I think i t?s too far north here for holi days but m ore and m ore touri sts are ing. They li ke i ce fi shi ng and photographi ng pol ar bears. I star as far away from pol ar bears as possi bl e. I li ke my warm office and m y warm house. ” “I?m busi nes m an. My grandfather woul d li ve i n i ce houses when he hunted i n wi nter, but not so m any peopl e do that now. the ol d m en used to m ake one i n a few hours. They used to l ive i n ski n tents i n summ er – the tents were easy to m ove so the peopl e could fol low the ani m al s. ” A few mi nutes l ater they arri ved i n Iqal uit, a town wi th a popul ati on of 6000, on Si m on?s snowm obi l e. It was two o?cl ock i n the afternoon, but i t was al ready dark, and al the houses shone wi th bright l i ghts. Beth sai d, “ Why is i t so dark? It?s the m i ddl e of the day!” Sim on repl i ed, “It?s dark i n the day because we are so far north. You shoul d e in June. The sun shi nes al ni ght i n the north then.
