I don’t want them to remi nd me of her.” So he did. As he sadly passed the tea shop on the corner on his wasy home, he heard a voi ce cal ing hi m. Winter Carnival i n Quebec A group of very cold tourists are si ti ng in a cafe i n old Quevec, dri nki ng hor coffee to try to warm up. The temperature i s 32 degrees bel ow freezing. The wi ndows are cobered wi th steam from the heat i nside. Outside, snow covers the streets and i s pi led up al ong the si dewal ks. The music and li ghts of the Carnival conti nue, but after a whol e day of watchi ng parades, ridi ng i n horse carri ages and li stening to the music, their fet are freezi ng and their noses are red. Every year, hundreds of thousands of peopl e e to Quebec to take part i n the weel l ong winter festival, the bi ggest in the worl d. Everyone who es must be prepared to keep m ovi ng. As i t is too col d to stand and watch for long. Earl y i n the morning, you can watch the snowboarding peti ti ons on the hi l overlooking the ri ver. Competitors speed down the track and through the ai r as though they could fl y. The m ore brave of heart may try the canoe races. Fi ve or si x m en paddl e each canoe across the partl yfrozen St Lawrence Ri ver. The ri ver i s ful l of bi g pi eces of i ce, and i f you were to fal i n, you woul d freeze i n l ess than two mi nutes. On of the favouri te events i s the dogsl ed race, i n whi ch teams of about si x husky dogs pl l ong sl eds at great speds al ong a snowy track. O ne person runs behi nd the sl ed, shouting to the dogs to encoutage them. The sound of the dogs barki ng, the cal l s of the dri vers and the shouts of crowd m ake an exci ti ng N othern experi ence. The dogs are beauti ful strong anim al s, with l ong, thi ck fur and m any with bl ue eyes. Whi l e adm iri ng the i ce scul ptures ecerywhere i n the city, m uch l ike those i n H arbi n i n China, you can stop wi th other touri sts i n an i gloo for hot tea or coffe. It i s am azi ng how warm these i ce howses can be! Late i n the eveni ng, you can go to the snow pal ace, where Bonhomm e the snowman is ki ng, and joi n the crowd. You can dance outside to the musi c of a band, who are al dresed in heavy cl othes – even som e their instrum ents are dressed up for wi nter. Fi naly, you wi l probably want to sit down in a cafe wo warm up an to plan tomorrow. You mi ght joi n the snowmobi le races – or maybe you should just sl ep in! Uni t 2 COME AND EAT HERE (1) Wang Peng sat i n his empty restaurant fel ing very frustrated. It had been a very strange morning. Usual y he got up earl y and prepared his menu of barbecued m utton kebabs, roast pork, sti rfried vegetables and fried ri ce. Then by l unchtim e they would al be sol d. By now hi s restaurant ought to be ful l of people. But not today! Why was that? What could have hapened? He thought of his mutton, beef and bacon cooked i n the hottest, fi nest oi l. Hi s cola was sugary and cold, and his ice cream was made of milk, cream and del icious fruit. “Nothing coul d be better,” he thought. Suddenl y he saw his friend Li Chang hurying by. “Hel lo, Lao Li,” he cal led, “Your usual ?” But Li Chang seemed not to hear. What was the matter? Something terribl e m ust have happened i f Li Chang was not i ng to eat i n hi s restaurant as he al ways did. Wang Peng fol owed Li Chang into a new smal l e saw a sign i n the wi ndow. Tired of al l that fat? Want to lose weight? Come inside Yong Hui’s slimm ing restaurant. Only sl im ming foods served here. Make yourself thi n agai n. Curi osity drove Wang Peng insi de. It was ful of people. The hostess, a very thin lady came forward. “Wel e,” she said. “My name is Yong H ui. I’l hel p you l ose weight and be fit in two weeks if you eat here every day.” Then she gave a menu to Wang Peng. There were few choices of food and drink on it: just rice, raw vegetables served i n vinegar, frui t and water. Wang Peng was amazed at this and especi aly at the prices. It cost more than a good meal in hi s restaurant! H e could not bel ieve hi s eyes. He threw down the menu and hurried outsi de. O n hi s way home he thought about his own menu. Did it m ake people fat? Perhaps he should go to the l ibrary and find out. H e could not have Yong Hui geti ng away with tel ing people li es! H e had better do some research! At the l ibrary Wang Peng was surprised to find that his restaurant served far to much fat and Yong Hui’s far too littl e. Even though her customers m ight get thi n after eati ng Yong Hui’s food, they were not eating enough energygi vi ng food to keep them fit. They woul d bee ti red very quickly. Wang Peng felt m ore hopeful as he drove back hom e. Perhaps wi th a di scount and a new si gn he could win his customers back! So he wrote: Want to feel fi t and energetic? Come and eat here!
