【正文】 duty of taking care of and protecting his mother and this idea was deeply rooted in his mind. As the result of the special family circumstance, Paul has a deep love for his mother. In the period of his growing up, this emotion gradually evolves the ―Oedipus Complex‖. We could see that Paul deeply loved his mother that he obeyed what his mother said and did what his mother wished him to. During his life, all he did was to please his mother. When he was a child, he walked all day, went miles and miles to look for the blackberry that his mother liked. When he was away from home, he looked forward to get home earlier because he knew that his mother was lonely and waiting for him back. In his eyes, his mother was an elegant, graceful, and beautiful woman. Every night, he would send his mother to bed and kissed her for good night. He utterly detests his father and loves his mother. He cannot bear his love for mother to be neglected. However, sometimes mother’s abnormal, possessive love lets him stifle. Then he begins to escape. During that time, Paul falls in love twice. In his youth, Paul39。s loves are failures. The critics mainly believe Paul39。s ―Oedipus Complex‖ is the biggest reason for his failure in love. But his abnormal character doesn39。t exist from his birth, many aspects, such as himself, his mother, and the society, cause it. We can see the following reasons in the novel. First, the closed living conditions. Paul’s first object of sexual love is mother’s breast. His mother arouses a series of his physical sensation, so she bees the child’s first seducer. As the first and the strongest lover, his mother turns into original shape to the love relationship between both sexes. Once it is established, it cannot be changed all one39。s life. In the first year of Paul’s birth, the character of father is ignored as well as the subsidiary function of having a baby. Second, mother’s son Oedipus Complex caused by her character defect. The mother over cares the son, which causes the son’s strong dependence on her body. We can say that the mother’s son fixation causes the son’s mother fixation. For Mrs. Morel, she loses her husband’s love, so she devotes love to her elder son. After William death, she turns to Paul. Both of them are intimate. For Paul, he also loses the love of father. Two lonely spirits are pletely bound up with each other in the long hard time and find the fragmentary love from each other. Paul bees a person of twofold status: son and the spiritual lover of his mother. This situation causes the plicated love with his mother. So Paul has an endless relationship with his mother in spirit. Third, the reason on Paul’s self growing development. In adolescence, Paul lacks in courage to understand sexual knowledge in the correct way. So he makes ―Oedipus Complex‖ as an easygain and acceptable sexual contact, sexual illusion. Fourth, the reason of the mother’s character defect. Paul’s mother has some defects in character. She easily lets her son’s love for other sex concentrate on her. So the disastrous effect occurs. If Paul’s mother satisfies with her sexual life, the result may not happen. In that case, the mother will not take her child for the appearance of satisfying the sexual appetite, which can only be sought for adults. The pure impulse of parents is to take care the child, not ask for love. Generally speaking, the young child’s sexual appetite for the opposite sex can find a natural, healthy outlet from other child. In that case, they are part of the game and prepare for the adult behaviors like all the games. After his three or four year’s days, child should have partners for both sexes in order to consider his development of sentiment. He should not only have his brothers and sisters, but also have other panions at the same age. Unfortunately, Paul does not feel smooth at this age. Effect of Oedipus Complex Paul’s Oedipus plex is not only his spiritual problem but also the social problem. 新疆大學科學技術學院畢業(yè)論文（設計） 11 The shadow brought by industrial production controlled the family life of each coal miner. It was the very social background that caused the family conflicts of the Morel family as well as other coal miners’ families. The miners did terribly hard labor in the dark and humid pits day and night just like donkeys, and risked their lives all the time at the moment they entered the pits. Gradually, they became rough and peremptory. When they didn’t work, they would get rid of tiredness and grievance by drinking until they became drunk. The drunken miners went home, illtreated their wives and children. Meanwhile, the wives did all the housework and brought up their children in the narrow and small houses. They municated with neighbors in the muddy streets and lanes. They were uneasy about the little money that had left and worried about their children. The children were growing up in such circumstance—poor, dirty, and not well educated. In the novel, the author shows many basic contrasts, such as the unmatched parents, the obsessive mother and the loose lovers, besides these contrasts, he also shows other conflicts, such as diggings and farms, cities and countries, work and leisure. Things went on and then became a circle. The capitalist system takes the miners’ opportunities to be educated away, forces them to work, and makes them poor. And the miners’ sufferings were transferred to their wives and families. The wives bee discontent and disappointed so they transfer their love from their husbands to their children. Too much abnormal love from mothers eventually leads to sons Oedipus plex. So it is not only Paul’s disease, but also the capitalist disease. On the one hand, Mrs. Morel is strongly je
