【正文】 t is very bright…maybe too bright. (3) Text 4 W: What should we do? M: I guess we?ll have to clean it up and tell mom and dad what happened. Mom?s going to be very upset that we broke her favorite chair. (4) Text 5 M: You type so slowly. Didn?t you ever take a typing class? W: No. I learned on my own. M: That explains it. (5) Text 6 M: Hi. I think I need a new phone. I dropped my old one, and the glass is broken. (6) W: Let?s take a look here…yea h, we see this all the time. It?s one of the reasons that we remend people buy a case for their phones. M: Yeah, I?ll know for next time. This was my first smartphone, so I didn?t really know what I was doing. W: So, there are a couple of things we can do. Obviously, you could just go ahead and buy a new phone. Or you could have this one repaired by one of our expert staff. M: How much is that service? W: It?s $159, plus tax. M: OK. And how much are the new phones? W: They range in price from $100 up to $400, but you have to sign up for two years of service. (7) M: Well, maybe I can find a new phone for about $200. Text 7 M: It?s finally out! W: What are you talking about? M: The newest iPhone, of course! W: I thought you just got a new iPhone. M: I got the 5S. But now the 6 is here! W: You?re wrong. The 6 won?t be out until September. (9) I read that on Yahoo news this morning. It?s only the middle of July right now. You have a while to wait. M: I know I can?t buy it right now, but someone posted pictures of it online. (8) Probably someone who works for Apple did it again. Anyway, it?s a beautiful phone. And its screen is amazing! W: Why? What?s different about this screen? I know the pany has been making its screens stronger. It?s hard to scratch the newer screens, (10) and they?re pretty tough when you drop them. M: Well, the iPhone 6 screen isn?t ordinary glass. It?s made from something almost as hard as diamond! (10) It?s almost impossible to break. Text 8 W: Sweetie, you don?t look so good. How?re you feeling? M: I feel fine, Mom. Why? W: You have red spots all over your neck. (11) We?ve got to get that checked out. I?ll have to take you to the doctor?s. M: Oh, no! Please, Mom! I can?t miss school today. I feel great! Really! W: That?s funny. Usually, you?d be happy to miss a day of school. M: Yes, but not today! They will decide on the players for the basketball team today after school. I can?t miss it! W: But I can?t send you to school looking like that. The school nurse would send you home right away. M: Can?t you just put some makeup on me to cover it up? (12) W: Haha! No, I can?t do that. How about this…we?ll go to the doctor?s and find out what?s up. If it?s just from the heat, you can go back to school. If you have a sickness that other children could catch from you, though, you?ll have to stay at home. But we?ll get a note from the doctor. I?m sure the basketball coach will let you try out after you get better. (13) Text 9 M: Hey, Tina. I thought I?d see you here. W: Hi, Rich. Yeah, I figured this would be the best place to find a job for next year. But I thought you were one year younger than me. You still have another year to find something. (17) M: I know. (17) But I always try to plan ahead as much as possible. Besides, many of the panies at this job fair are looking for summer staffs. Maybe if I get a position like that, they?ll offer me a real job the following year once I graduate. (14) (15) W: That?s pretty smart. What?s your major, again? M: Economics. What about you? W: Business. It?s really petitive, and a lot of panies prefer to hire men. M: Actually, I think if you show that you?d be a good employee, many panies would actually prefer to hire a woman. W: Really? Why is that? M: Well, most of the people in your field are guys, right? You have an advantage over them that they can?t really change. Companies don?t want the same people all the time. That means someone like you is especially valuable. W: Are you saying that someone will give me a job just because I?m female? M: No, of course not. But let?s be honest: it will definitely benefit you more than if you were, say, an art major. (16) W: I guess you?re right. M: The best thing is to be confident. Tell these panies why they will be lucky to have you, not the other way around. Text 10 American charter schools are similar to public schools. They both get money and other types of support from the government. They are expected to teach the same standards as public schools, and their students must pass the same tests in order to continue to stay open, hire teachers, and receive government funding. But parents have certain rights in charter schools that public schools don?t offer. (18) It is the parents? responsibility to enforce(實(shí)施 ) the school rules and make sure the teachers and administrators are meeting the school?s goals. They can even vote to have certain staff members fired — including the principal — if they get enough votes. In this way, charter schools are similar to private schools, where parents basically have all the power. Many public schools whose students are not doing well can be taken over by charter schools. There is some research showing that charter schools can improve test scores and academic performance, but many charter schools perform no better than public schools in the same school district, even in dangerous neighborhoods. (19) Also, teachers at charter schools are not allowed to form labor unions. Because of this, many teachers do not want to work at charter schools. (20) This means that charter schools are more likely to hire less experienced teachers than public schools. But parents like the idea of more control over their children?s education, which is the main reason why they have bee so popular.
