South China Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou 510650, ChinaAbstract: Diurnal variation of soil respiration was measured using dark static chambers for two consecutive years in two typical landuse types in a hilly area of South China: plantation dominated by Pinus massoniana and orchard dominated by Dimocarpus longan Lour. There were two plots at both sites respectively: one was covered with litters on the surface soil and the other had no litters. The result showed that the diurnal range of soil respiration rate at both sites was small but larger in the rainy season (AprilSeptember) than that in the dry season (OctoberMarch). There was no obvious rule of the peak value of soil respiration rate in the day and night. The average monthly soil respiration rate was in the range of ~ mgm2h1 in the pine plantation and ~ mgm2h1 in the orchard. The lowest value of soil respiration rate appeared in December or January and the highest value appeared in June, July, August or October. It was proved that selecting 9:0011:00 as sampling time for each sampling day was suitable in Heshan hilly area according to the diurnal variation measurement. The effect of soil temperature to the diurnal variation of soil respiration rate was not obvious. Precipitation had great effect on soil respiration with higher value in rainy season than that in dry season. Vegetation types were another factor affecting soil respiration with higher value in the orchard than that in the pine plantation. The effect of litter to soil respiration was also not obvious. Key words: soil respiration。 land use。 litter。 diurnal variation.
