Organization of the ThesisThe whole thesis is divided into seven chapters.Chapter One: Discussing the significance and necessity of the present study and its basic framework.Chapter Two: Introducing the available researches on English spread and methodologies applied in this paper.Chapter Three: A brief examination on the intrinsic features of the English language and the history of English global travel path.Chapter Four: Analyzing the language conditions in South Africa and the trail along which the English language got its root deeply into the nation.Chapter Five: Comparisons about the language planning and policies in different historical periods, reflecting how the English language wins the dominance as the national tongue.Chapter Six: Analyzing the representative events or cases in history.Chapter Seven: Drawing a brief summary of the thesis, analyzing the limitations and implications and offering some suggestions for future research.Chapter Two Literature Review and Theoretical Framework Researches throughout the WorldDue to both typicality and particularity of its multilingual settings, a lot of world famous researchers and scholars both at home and abroad are really interested in studying the history of English language spread during different periods in South Africa, with the aim of getting a stronger supporting material for the language and culture single polarization nowadays around the world. To solve this issue, most of foreign researchers and scholars are on the side of adopting an indigenous language as the primary medium of instruction. It is due to their hard work that the study develops so smoothly and has acplished great achievements. Foreign Researches on the Language Policy of South AfricaNeville Edward Alexander (born on 22nd, October, 1936) is a firm supporter of forming a multilingual South Africa and a former revolutionary who spent ten years in the prison on Robben Island with Nelson Mandella. After being released he has done a lot of leading work with respect to the language policy and planning field in South Africa since the early 1980s through different organizations, such as the National Language Project, PRAESA(Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa), as well as the famous LANGTAG(Language Plan Task Group). His main scope of research is within the New South Africa (after apartheid) period. In his book An Ordinary Country: Issues in the Transition from Apartheid to Democracy (2002), he emphasizes that “the new South Africa is ordinary insofar as the imperatives of globalization drive it towards being a deeply divided society in which, as in all countries today, the divisions are determined by class” (Alexander, 2002:96). Also he concludes that “this pattern is set to continue into the future。 that is, that class struggles will be fought out within the framework of a normalised capitalist society or acmodated within the liberal democratic constitutional order, as they are in other such states” (Alexander, 2002:167). With reference to the indigenous people’s attitudes towards English language learning, he points out in his essay “The politics of language planning in postapartheid South Africa” (2004), that “we are faced with the rising black middleclass elite which, for reasons that have been canvassed in many different essays by many authors as well as by myself, are pletely enthralled by the value of the English language for their own and their progeny’s upward mobility. For our purposes here, it suffices to draw attention to the fact that the phenomenon of ‘the unassailable position of English’ can be understood in many different ways” (Alexander, 2004:119). This phenomenon is also referred to in his 1997 debates: “Ideologically, those who are proficient in English are in possession of invaluable cultural capital。 the sky is the limit for them as far as highpaying jobs and career options are concerned in a context of poverty and inequality...Whether we like it or not, it is an incontestable stubborn fact that most black people in South Africa consider mand of the English language to be the key to all that is good and desirable in this life” (Alexander, 1997b).Nkonko M. Kamwangamalu is another prominent figure deserved to be mentioned in relation to the reference. As a Professor of Linguistics in the Department of English of Howard University, he is recognized internationally for his scholarship in respect of sociolinguistics. He has published many monographs, journal papers, and book reviews on the topic of language problems in South Africa, which are just within his research destinations. His long and profound work “The language planning situation in South Africa” (2001), examines the language planning situation in South Africa, where language has been instrumental in the country’s transition from colonialism to apartheid to democracy. He points out that: The hegemony of English can be explained in terms of the key factors in language maintenance and shift outlined earlier: status, generation, socioeconomic value, numerical strength, education, Government language policy. In terms of the status and socioeconomic value and because of the multiple functions it performs in South African society, English ranks higher than any of the country’s other official languages. Because it is seen as the key to upward social mobility, English is the language in which the majority of South African parents want their children to be educated. This reality explains why, when apartheid ended in 1994, and with it school segregation
