We will feel hopeless and lonely in the dark at night, but a little light can fort us. Unfortunately for the old man, the light is artificial, and the fort bought by the light in the caf233。 is just temporary because the younger waiter drove him away. Theme and Characters ? 1. Theme : ? there is no God, no meaning to this world, and man must consequently find something to distract himself from his horrible world. For the older waiter, a clean, welllighted caf233。 is such an escape. This is an artificial light, made by man for man, yet it is the only way to step out of the darkness of reality: that life is filled with nothing meaningful. ? : ? Code hero: old man ? drunk, the old man isn39。t rude or unruly, but polite and well behaved. Despite the obvious hardships in his life , he doesn39。t lose his cool, but stays in control of himself, exhibiting grace under pressure. Such grace, Hemingway asserts, should be the goal of every individual. ? Young Waiter: ? impatient with the old man, hoping to return home to his wife by a decent hour. He doesn39。t understand how important it is to offer a place to his customer. ? Older Waiter: understands the deeper things in life, believing strongly that he must keep the caf233。 open in order to let others stay in the light, as he wishes also to remain in the light. Lonely,fearful,confident of nothing ? Youth and Oldness the antithesis of feelings and attitudes of life. 1) The older waiter had been aware of the emptiness and loneliness came with consenescence(衰老） . And he bravely accepted and faced the horrible truth in life. It was the emptiness of life, the loneliness of the soul and the fear of darkness which forced the old man have to find place ? ? 2) So the older waiter could understand the old man’s feeling. He could realize the existence of “nada”. So he was sympathetic.. 3) But the younger waiter hadn’t realized the ing truth when he was being older。 he was satisfied with his life. He was still young and confident.
