e study of its position and translation will help people in speech munication to better understand and use the euphemism. His article covers four aspects, namely lexical, spelling, grammatical and rhetorical means to analyze the constructing principle of English euphemism and discusses English euphemism translation strategies and methods through examples. Pragmatic functions In their paper “Functions of Euphemism and Its Linguistic and Cultural Elements”, Zhu Shi and Zheng Yuqi (2001:8081) discuss the basic concept of euphemism and the positive and negative functions on the basis of the historical origin and language and cultural factors that are closely related with these functions. In his paper Xu Yiliang (2006:201202) discusses the constructing method from the typical features of euphemism, and studies further the function from the angle of aesthetics, psychology and social linguistics. English euphemism has rich means of construction which reflects the strong pragmatic function. Its coverage is very wide, involving all aspects of life, and from different extent it reflects the social morality, the British and American values, cultural tradition and political ideas. In the use of euphemism, we should follow the politeness principle and attend to the Face principle. At the same time, its use is also restricted by age, gender, identity, social status and many factors, and as to the understanding of the euphemism, it can39。t be separated from specific context. Therefore, the study on euphemism is both practical and inspiring for appropriate language munication. For learners of English, to understand and master the knowledge of euphemism is helpful to improving the reading appreciation ability, to understanding the AngloAmerican social and cultural life and to improving English level. Summary The correct understanding and use of language plays an important role in different kinds of cultural exchange and holds an irreplaceable position in interpersonal relationship. Because of the unique nature of euphemism, and relatively plex and changeable structure and cultural connotation, these all are added to the difficulty of the correct understanding of euphemism. To accurately understand English euphemism, first of all, it is important to understand the characteristics and master the necessary translation skills. Research shows that many articles focus on the aspects referred to in the former part, like function, cultural connotation and so on. There is little attention paid to the English euphemism characteristics and special research methods of translation. However, the accurate understanding of English euphemism and having necessary translation skills in euphemism are of vital importance to the translation and to accurately spreading English cultural connotation. Therefore, this paper mainly studies English euphemism from its characteristics and the translation methods in order to help English learners to improve their ability to understand and master English euphemism, to help them to be able to better understand and use English euphemism in crosscultural munication, thereby to better spread English culture and promote the cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.3 An Introduction to English Euphemism Euphemism is a kind of cultural phenomenon that has long existed in Chinese and Western societies and is being frequently used in all areas of social life. Euphemism is a euphemistic language expression method and an important language means of interpersonal relationship. The correct use of euphemism can help facilitate crosscultural munication toward good development. Euphemism is a unique rhetoric. Both English and Chinese languages share some similarities in the language rhetoric, but because of their respective historical background, customs, living environment, difference of aesthetic concepts and their language features, structure and application scope, they have many differences. From the aspect of features and translation methods, this paper conducts a thorough analysis on euphemism with many examples to achieve a better understanding of them and at the same time erase more language and culture barriers in intercultural munication. Origin of English euphemism According to the research of many experts, the appearance of English euphemism is due to language taboo. When people give up a taboo, they e up with another word to fill in the blank, thus a euphemistic word is created (Ullmann, 1962:205). Experts who have long been studied on euphemism point out that the foremost aim of euphemism is religious. People worship gods and are afraid of ghosts。 they dare not to call them directly, so gods and ghosts bee the first taboos, then the words used to refer to gods and ghosts bee the first euphemisms. As time passed by, euphemisms spread to other fields. The most typical and also the most mon one is euphemism about “death” which in most cultures is also a god, “god of death”. A lot of euphemistic words about “death” were created out of people’s fear about death. Neaman and many other experts (1990:3) claim that “birth”, the opposite of death, is also mystic. The taboo about “birth” is still religious。 the relation of birth and sex only es to mind in recent years. This point can be justified by the proverb “The stork brings babies”. Obviously, ancient people thought that the touch between women and stork would give birth to babies. Later taboo spread to other body organs. All in all, the use of English word “euphemism” started from avoiding taboos. As to the human language, “euphemism” is derived from “Word Fetishism” and earlier human civilization. Besides, people’s psychology of taboo not only controls words, but also a helpful plement to the language system. The coexistence of taboo and euphemism enriches the vocabulary of language.
