ts, it is a required course to get a better understanding of the host country39。s euphemisms. Anyway, every detail movement of two countries39。 diplomatic activities will be magnified by the mass media. And every move of representatives of the two countries is closely monitored. Once you don39。t behave appropriately, you are to blame. Recently, Bill Gates39。 greetings to Korean president Park Geunhye have aroused Korean people39。s strong unpleasant feelings. The story is that Bill did not extend both his hands to shake hands with Park but kept shaking hands with Park while the other hand was in his pocket. As we all know that Korea is a 江蘇科技大學外國語學院畢業(yè)論文 12 quite traditional country and Korean people take traditional rituals seriously than any other countries. In fact it is not the first time for Bill to behave offensively. It is reasonable to say that it is his habit to keep one hand in his pocket while shaking hands with other people. Not until many other pictures of Bill shaking hands with others with one hand in his pocket are shown in Inter did Korean people stop blaming him. I am sure Bill has not known why Koreans have kept annoying him until the end of this affair. We should learn something from this issue and think about why he has never been blamed in the past when he was impolite. We may easily find from those pictures that in the past, he shook hands with Western people while this time with the head of the most traditional people on the earth. Who39。s fault then? 江蘇科技大學外國語學院畢業(yè)論文 13 IV. Conclusion English euphemisms are both a language phenomenon and a social phenomenon. After a long period of social progress, people have learned how to express their thoughts in an appropriate way which may help extend original meaning without hurting other39。s feeling or causing an embarrassing condition. English euphemisms are applied in many aspects of life and Western people can not municate with each other smoothly without English euphemisms. From the president to a pupil, nobody can say anything out directly to others if they don39。t mean to hurt their friends. And from general life to diplomacy between two countries , English euphemisms are everywhere in western countries. This paper tries to do some academic research on the origination, function, and specific applications of English euphemisms so that we can have a clear understanding of English euphemisms and how Western people behave in their life. If language is a reflection of life, then a euphemism is rather a mirror of social psychology. In Christian countries, God39。s name should not be covered, or a curse would be cast on one person. In many Western countries, the topic of taboos is a very sensitive one, and for English learners, it is quite necessary to get familiar with some basic euphemisms in order to municate with Western people smoothly. English euphemisms are reflected in every aspect of people39。s daily life, and learning it is helpful for English majors to get a better understanding of Western culture and the development of Western countries. Besides, it is a good way to promote cultural munication and social cooperation between two countries through keeping a thorough analysis of English euphemisms. 江蘇科技大學外國語學院畢業(yè)論文 14 Bibliography [1] 涂朝蓮,程建山 .Thesis Writing Guide for English Majors[M]. 華中科技大學出版社, 2021.
