s just an attitude or a mood that a personcan shake off. It39。s not that easy.Sometimes even people who are depressed don39。t take their condition seriously enough. Some people feel that they are weak in some way because they are depressed. This is wrong — and it caneven be harmful if it causes people to hide their depression and avoid getting help.Occasionally, when depression causes physical symptoms (things like headaches or other stressrelated problems), a person may see a doctor. Once in a while, even a wellmeaning doctor may not realize a person is depressed, and just treat the physical symptoms.Americans don’t know a lot about not only depression but also other mental illnesses. A recent survey by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), conducted in observance of May as Mental Health Month, found a significant lack of consumer knowledge and understanding about the warning signs, causes, and effective treatments for mental illnesses, such as depression . Almost half the public—44 percent—report knowing only a little or almost nothing at all about mental illnesses. But asked whether they would benefit from knowing more about the warning signs of mental illness, 84 percent said yes. Having a better understanding of depression will help those who suffer from them, their friends and families to seek help and get effective treatment so that they can live healthier lives. The more people understand the causes, warning signs and treatments, the more the stigma associated with depression will decline and people will get the help they need. Not everyone who has the genetic makeup for depression gets depressed, though. And many people who have no family history of depression have the condition. So although genes are one factor, they aren39。t the single cause of depression.Life EventsThe death of a family member, friend, or pet can go beyond normal grief and sometimes lead to depression. Other difficult life events, such as when parents divorce, separate, or remarry, can trigger depression. Even events like moving or changing schools can be emotionally challenging enough that a person bees depressed.Family and Social EnvironmentFor some teens, a negative, stressful, or unhappy family atmosphere can affect their selfesteem and lead to depression.
