As a great master of American realism, Mark Twain shows readers the most realistic portrayal of American society in the 19th century. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the most representative works. After centuries of ordeal, its immortal meaning still shines like gems. Constantly, scholars and critics pay more attention to analyses of the characters and Mark Twain39。s writing style in this novel. In recent years, some scholars begin to do specialized research on its initiation topic. In which, they touch on conflicts of the protagonist, Huck. But the amount of specialized research on Huck39。s conflicts is still small number. The author of this thesis focuses on the conflicts which are throughout this novel and the growing process of Huck。 meanwhile, does more indepth discussion。 and through prehensive and detailed analyses explore the subtle change caused by the conflicts in Huck39。s heart. The writer analyzes the conflicts from three main aspects, including the conflicts between Huck and Jim, society and Tom. Among which, the author emphasizes conflicts between Huck and Jim, slavery and Tom. At length, on the foundation of above analysis, it es to a conclusion :along with the escalating and development of various conflicts, Huck gradually achieves the transition from naiveness to maturity。 consequently, these conflicts are of great importance to his maturity.Key words: Huck, conflict, maturityTable of Contents摘要 iiiAbstract ivIntroduction 1ChapterⅠ. He was born in the small village of Florida, Missouri, on November 30, 1835. It was Florida that left a deep impression on Twain, which he called the paradise of children. Then, just before his fourth birthday, the whole family moved to Hannibal, a small town on the Mississippi River. And Twain’s Hannibal boyhood was crucial for the influence it had on the very best of his fiction such as Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Pudd’nhead Wilson and so on.1 These works gain Twain international fame. During his life, Samuel Langhorne Clemens enjoyed an international fame that has probably never been equaled by any other American author.2People always believe that the position of Twain in American literature is irreplaceable. Bernard Shaw once wrote to Mark Twain: 39。I am persuaded that the future historian of American will find your works as indispensable to him as a French historian finds the political tracts of Voltaire.39。 3 Furthermore, other great masters agreed with Bernard Shaw and admitted Mark Twain39。s indispensable position. William Dean Howells praised him as the Lincoln of our literature. William Faulkner called him the father of American literature. Henry Louis Mencken (18801956) regarded him as the true father of our national literature. These facts clearly indicate the affirmation of the world to Twain. However, the racism tendency in his works causes voice of criticism. Although scholars hold different views on Mark Twain, they culminated a general consensus on his 100th annual birthday in 1935 as follows: first, Mark Twain is a writer with American national features, representing folk culture of the west。 second, Mark Twain suits both refined and popular tastes。 third, Mark Twain39。s art of language is terrific, which originates from people and initiates the American literary language. Among his masterpieces, The adventures of Huckleberry Finn is noted for the origination of American literature. As Ernest Hemingway once remarked in the opening chapter of Green Hills of Africa (1935):all modern American literature es from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn... There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since.4 The Scottish novelist, Robert Louis Stevenson thought that the book was not only Mark Twain39。s masterpiece but also one of the greatest American novels. Once he showed an affinity for it: It39。s a book that I have read four times, and am quite ready to begin Again tomorrow.5In the early period of its publication, it was frequently damned for its
