sh are poor, can not understand the listening material. It is harmful to students’ selfconfidence. They would loose their selfconfidence and interest of learning English.Chapter Two The factors that hinder the enhancement of English listening skill All the up pages are talking about the problems which are made by the teachers during the listening class. And now we are going to talk about the factors that will influence students’ English listening. The linguistic factors Here, the base of English means pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. They are the foundation of English listening。 and have largely effected students’ listening ability. Pronunciation The basic form of language is pronunciation and intonation. As foreign language learners, especially junior students, there are many pronunciation problems, such as similar pronounced words, sentence stress, sentence weak and liaison, influence their listening prehension.(1) Similar pronounced words Many students feel it is very difficult to identify the words which pronounced similarly. For instance, many students can hardly differentiate the words like sheep/Fi:p/—— ship/Fip/ and bad/b230。d/——bed/bed/ during the listening test. For example, when the students hear “ There are two ships”, they may don’t know weather the word is sheep or ship. (2) Intonation In English, word stress is fixed, while sentence stress is free. One sentence can use different stresses to express different purposes or attitudes. English has two types of intonation. They are rising and falling intonation. Rising tone used to express uncertainty or unfinished. While falling tone is affirmed and the end. However many students do not know the rules. So it is difficult for students to get the right meaning. For example“A: Would you like to go shopping with me ? B:Sorry (↗)?” In this conversation ,B means that he/she did not hear A clearly. So he used rising tone on “Sorry”. However, many students didn’t know that and misunderstand that B did not want to go shopping with A. Then they get the wrong answer in the listening test.(3) Sentence weak In English sentence, the article, preposition, plural and pronoun always the weak. Students are easy to miss the words which are weak in the sentence. For example “ What did he do last night.” In that sentence “he” should be weak. And students may miss the word he。 and the sentence bee “what did do?”,which can not be understood by students. So it is very important for students to know the regularity of sentence weak, which can help them to improve the level of their listening ability. (4) Liaison Liaison is referred to the connection between adjacent words in conversation, especially in natural speech, sentence or means to link the stressed and unstressed words together. There is no pause between words .This phenomenon is called liaison. It can be divided into four kinds. a. When a word ends in a consonant and the next word begin with a vowel, we should read the consonant and the vowel together. For example “post office”. b. The current one word ends with a vowel and the next word begin with a vowel, the two should be even up to read, such as my∪arm. c. When two words between two or more than two consonant, connects the two word approach is as consonant binations. Such as next∪topic。 d. A word, which end up with a consonant, and a word, begin with a h, the h should be silent and read together with the former word. For example“What wil(l he)[wili]do?” Ha(s he)done it before? Mus(t he)[ti]go? Lea(ve him)[vim].” All these would trouble students during their listening test if they did not know these regulars. Because they can hardly hear the words clearly. So it is very important for teachers to pay more attention on this part and make students get the regular of English pronunciation .(Sun Hao, 2011:144—145)(5) Tempo Tempo means the speed of speaking. Some students believe that the speed of English sentence is not very fast, because the tempo of English, which they had listened, is not very fast. However the tempo is only in our daily study. It is more difficult for students to listen to long conversations, passages or native speakers. These problems are caused by the tempo. Most students are used to listen to their teachers’ pronunciation and tempo that is always slower than the speed in daily life. And the students are used to slow conversations with their partners when they practice oral English. That caused that many students can not follow the normal speed of listening materials or native speakers. Vocabulary Vocabulary is often pared to the brick of a language. A good language learner must know enough words. As a part of language, the ability of listening prehension also largely depend on vocabulary. The famous British linguist Wilkins had said: 1 “without grammar, very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing we can conveyed.” During the listening, the listeners heard the words first. So if the students did not have large vocabulary, it would be very difficult for them to get any information from listening importance of vocabulary has bee very evident now. However many students have the vocabulary problem which will directly affect the understanding of sentences or paragraphs. Grammar Grammar is the rules of a language. For the native English speaker, they did not know the grammar. However, grammar is existed in their daily life in fact. They just do not realize that. They have been very familiar with it. Or even we can say that grammar has been deep in their blood. But we Chinese students don’t have that language environment. So grammar can help Chinese students a lot to study English. It can helps students to get the regularity of sentence. In listening prehension, the words can be read very quickly and you can not catch the whole se
