Street Bankstown 24 Septem ber, 200— Dear Ms Sanders, I read i n the newspaper today that you are to be the archi tect for the new Bankstown ci nem a. I hope you wi l not m ind m e wri ti ng to ask i f you have thought about the needs of di sabl ed custom ers. In parti cular I wonder i f you have consi dered the fol l owi ng thi ngs: 1 Adequate access for wheel chai rs. It woul d be handy to have l i fts to al l parts of the ci nem a. The butons i n the li fts shoul d be easy for a person in a wheel chai r to reach, and the doors be wi de enough to enter. In som e ci nemas, the li fts are at the back of the ci nem a i n col d, unattractive pl aces. As di sabled peopl e have to use the l i fts, thi s m akes them feel they are not as im portant as other custom ers. 2 Earphones for people who have troubl e heari ng. It woul d hel p to fit sets of earphones to al seats, not just to some of them . This woul d al low heari ngim pai red custom ers to enjoy the pany of their heari ng fri ends rather than havi ng to sit i n a speci al area. 3 Rai sed seati ng. Peopl e who are short cannot al ways see the screen. So I’d l i ke to sugest that the seats at the back be pl aced hi gher than those at the front so that everyone can see the screen easil y. Perhaps there coul d be a space at the end of each row for peopl e i n wheel chai rs to si t next to their fri ends. 4 Toil ets. For di sabl ed custom ers i t woul d be m ore conveni ent to pl ace the toi l ets near the entrance to the ci nem a. It can be di fficul t i f the onl y di sabl ed toi l et i s i n the basem ent a l ong way from where the fi lm i s showing. And i f the doors coul d be opened outwards, di sabled custom ers woul d be very happy. 5 Car parki ng. O f course, there are usual l y spaces special y reserved for di sabled and el derly dri vers. If they are cl ose to the ci nem a entrance and /or exi t, it i s easier for di sabl ed peopl e to get to the film i n fort. Thank you for readi ng m y l etter. I hope m y suggesti ons wi l l m eet wi th your approval . Disabled peopl e should have the sam e opportuniti es as ablebodied peopl e to enjoy the cinem a and to do so with dignity. I am sure many people wil l prai se your cinema if you desi gn it with good access for di sabl ed people. It wi l al so make the ci nem a owners happy if more people go as they wi l make hi gher profi ts! Yours si ncerely, Al ice Major Uni t 2 SATISFACTION GUARANTEED Larry Belm ont worked for a pany that made robots. Recentl y it had begun experimenting with a househol d robot. Having earli er col ected speci al cl othes from the observatory, we put them on before we went any cl oser. Al l three of us looked l ike spacemen. We had whi te protective sui ts that covered our whol e body, helm ets, big boots and speci al gloves. It was not easy to walk in these sui ts, but we slowl y made our way to the edge of the crater and looked down i nto the red, boil ng centre. The other two cli mbed down into the crater to col ect som e l ava for later study, but thi s being m y first experience, I stayed at the top and watched them.
