【正文】 Bronson Alcott). As an ecologist, Thoreau devoted his entire love to the fields, woods, hills and waters of his native town. As a writer, he recorded what he saw, what he felt and what he learnt from nature, letting people from all around the world know the nature’s magic power. Thoreau believed human is one part of nature and is the child of nature. Human should preserve and return to nature. In this thesis, we will discuss what Thoreau’s view of nature is and what enlightenment his point gives us. 1. Thoreau’s view of nature Walt Whitman once mented: “The biggest drawback Thoreau has is his contempt—the contempt to human being”（ Walter Harding 116） . From this, we can see, even people who have democratic thoughts like Walt Whitman could not understand Thoreau. As a matter of fact, Thoreau does not have any contempt to human, and he is not arrogant. On the contrary, he has full feeling to human, he loves them, and he walks into the wild only wanting to tell them: look, there is another way we can live our life. Thoreau was doomed to be lonely in his day, but after his death he is not lonely in Walden because more and more people realize his value and begin to treat him as their spiritual guide. What’s the essence of Thoreau’s idea, and where his value could be used? Causes for Thoreau’s view of nature When we talk about the extraordinary geniusThoreau, one thing could not be avoided, that is, the factors which shape Thoreau’s point. Here we want to 2 classify them into there parts: personal reasons, regional reasons and cultural reasons. Personal reasons Thoreau was born on 12th June, 1817 in a little town named Concord in Massachusetts. He was the third of four children. His father was a businessman who was busy running about his work all year through. Naturally, his mother took the responsibility to educate the children. Indeed, Thoreau’s mother was a woman who loves nature, she cultivated his simple personality and the affection to nature. In sunny days, she took their children to go for an outing。s surface, and when we look around, there are always way to go. You are between heaven and earth when you climb up to the bumps of the earth, and whether the sun or the human residence, is not far from you”(朱子怡 62) . Pioneering spirit and loving for nature allow Thoreau to stand on a new point to understand nature. Nobody could reach that far in regard to nature. Regional reasons Thoreau’s life is closely linked with two places: one is Concord, the other is Walden. These two places provide Thoreau a particular regional perspective to form his view of nature. Concord, built in 1635 is an old city located in the northeast of Massachusetts. The American Independence War broke out here in 1775. Therefore, it occupies an unique position in American history. Though population are sparsely populated, many famous writers were living here, such as Hawthorne, Alcott. In 1834, Ralph Waldo Emerson, the master of transcendentalism, settled in Concord, making Concord a holy land to lots of people. To Thoreau, Concord is the whole world. Thoreau immersed in this world, touching every flower and grass, enjoying every mountain and river, feeling every sunshine and ground here. He saw the beauty of nature by his eyes, felt the great of nature by his heart, rethought people’s behavior by his wisdom and wrote down the 4 mind sparks by his pen. Concord is Thoreau’s beloved hometown and major works of Thoreau are connected with Concord. In this town, he built and planted , he made boat and traveled around. His footprint covered this area, and he was the incarnation of Concord. Walden, a nameless lake but famed the world by Thoreau’s twoyear living. Geographically, it is located in the outtown of Concord. In Thoreau’s eyes, Walden is beautiful but not magnificent and people are not easily attracted by it if he does not live nearby. Thoreau said he would leave his house and go to the lake if he felt tired about modern society and people’s gossip. He sat on the beach and watched the fishes, enjoying the peace and pleasure Walden brings him. Walden, this unremarkable lake, inspires Thoreau with its unique fascination, having an immeasurable impact on the formation of Thoreau39。s famous quote, became the motto of transcendentalists. This view emphasizes people39。s all show to this philosopher” (Ralph Waldo Emerson 242245). Thoreau is indeed a minstrel of the natural year. In regard to nature, he accepted the point of view that everything has a spirituality.
