Althogh the area to the north of the site feathures largescale mixeduse buildings that are part of the South Boston Waterfront Redevelopment , smaalscale residential buildings characterize the area to the south . The design of the building effectively negotiates this transition by following the chang in elevation with a long, gently sloped roof. To further integrate the plex into its surroudings and lessen its visual impact on the South Boston neighborhood, the vast volume of the exhibition hall has been surrouded by smaller scale meeting rooms and social spaces . Vehicular traffic in and out of the convention center was also a sensitive issue with local residents.
