But because of the differences of the culture backgrounds and customs of different countries, there are differences in the courtesy during munication. In China, when friends meet, showing the way of courtesy is to shake hands which are similar to most countries in the world. Chinese used to cup one hand in the other before the chest as a salute. This tradition has a history of more than 2021 years and nowadays it is seldom used except in Spring Festival. And shaking hands is more popular and appropriate on some formal occasions. Bowing, as to convey respect to the ones of higher level, was often used by those such as subordinates, students, and attendants. But at present Chinese youngsters tend to simply nod as greeting. To some extent this evolution reflects everincreasing paces of modern life. It should be generally cordial and natural to shake hands acpanied by smiling and greeting, between host and guest, the host should stretch out one’s hand first。 【標題】 中英日常交際禮儀文化差異 【作者】 童 琴 【關鍵詞】 中英 日常交際 禮儀 文化差異 【指導老師】 程 瓊 【專業(yè)】 英語教育 【正文】 1. Introduction As China’s economy grows and international transportation develops, more and m ore Chinese people visit Englishspoken countries for business, study, vacations, etc, and encounter nativeEnglish speakers in many settings where munication is necessary. One of the problems in munication is etiquette, which means “l(fā)i yi” in Chinese. There are many English expressions such as “etiquette”, “courtesy”, “decorum”, “protocol”, “rites”, “propriety”, “ceremony”, “rule of conduct”, and so on. Etiquette is a universal phenomenon in human interaction and is an important element for successful munication. There is no doubt that etiquette plays an important role in crosscultural munication. This paper gives a historical review of the study of etiquette in the English culture as well as the study of etiquette in the Chinese culture, mainly discusses the definition of etiquette, the definition of culture, the relationship between Chinese and English and differences in the daily munication etiquette for the Chinese and English such as addressing, greeting, first meeting, introduction, business card exchanging and serving the gusts etc. Then this paper makes a conclusion of culture values between Chinese and English in etiquette. 2. Etiquette and Culture Definition of Etiquette In society, there are social conventions and cultural traditions. To be a civilized member of the munity, people have to follow all the social rules. The degree of etiquette embodied in munication reflects the level of the social civilization. In munication, in order to achieve municative goal, and enhance friendship, people do their best to consider the others’ benefit, avoid offences and misunderstandings and to be polite. The etiquette concerned in the thesis mainly refers to that of daily munication. For instance, in China, when people meet, they may exchange uninformative views such as whether the counterpart has eaten. That is unnecessary information. In Chinese culture background, they are only greetings, . the courteous acts performed to serve the function of social involvement. Under most circumstances, we interact politely so as to show our good intention, concerns, to start a conversation. “ Sometimes we feel that we have to be polite in order to show that we are civilized and cultivated to such an extent that we know what to do to live up to the conventionally recognized social standards so that we will not be accused of being rude or illmannered.”1 In a civilized society, people learn to be tolerant and conform to a kind of conventionalized social norms. Etiquette is a universal phenomenon. It is widely accepted that etiquette is a means of both establishing, maintaining friendly and harmonious relationship, or to make pensation for what is being damaged, and if ignored, even terminating social relationships with other people. Etiquette can also be regarded as a social constraint imposed by the conventions of the munity. Definition of Culture The concept of culture is difficult to define. From the Interculturalmunication, we know that munication and culture are closely related. They are intrinsically inseparable. Culture is the foundation of munication. Then, what is culture? The Chinese word 文化 ( wen hua) , culture , refers to, according to the Modern Chinese Dictionary, 1) the total sum of material and spiritual wealth created by the mankind in the process of the social and historical development, especially, literature, art, science, education, etc. 2) the ability to use the written language and possession of book knowledge and 3) the aggregation of historical remains, relics of the same historical periods. From the first definition, we can see that culture includes everything, material and spiritual, created by human beings. On the other hand, it especially refers to literature, art, science, education and so on. Culture is thus whatever a person must know in order to function in a particular society, including language and conventional behavioral norms that a person must follow or that other people in the society expect you to follow, to get through the task of daily living. When we study a culture, it is not enough to merely learn the knowledge of a language and behavioral norms, as Steinmetz, Antonen and JosephGoldfarb point out: studying culture does not mean looking only at customs, institutions, and artifacts, etc, but also studying a people’ values, beliefs, and attitudes and how they influence or are influenced by interaction among people2 . So culture should be studied as a process as well as a product. Other aspects of culture, like language, eating habits, customs, are should be considered. Relationship bet
